Eight state tournament spots will be up for grabs across the state today.

The Class B SoDak 16 is today as teams look to earn spots to the state tourney, which is March 17-19 in Aberdeen. Here’s a look at each Class B SoDak 16 contest:

No. 1 De Smet (21-1) vs. No. 16 Chester Area (12-10), 7:30 p.m.

HURON — No. 1 seed and No. 1 ranked De Smet is closing in another trip to the Bs.

The Bulldogs have qualified for three consecutive Class B state tournaments, including last year’s state championship. They were the Class B state runner-ups in 2019 (the 2020 tournament was canceled due to the pandemic).

De Smet is led by all-state guards Kalen Garry and Rett Osthus, who have combined for more than 3,000 career points. Garry is headed to play at South Dakota State University, while Osthus will play at Dakota Wesleyan University. The Bulldogs are also paced by 6-foot-9 junior post Damon Wilkinson and senior forward Tory Holland.

The Bulldogs have gone undefeated against South Dakota competition this season. Their lone loss came against national power Dream City Christian (Arizona) at the Sanford Pentagon in December. De Smet has picked up wins over a number of SoDak 16 qualifiers in both Class A and B, including Clark/Willow Lake, Sioux Valley, White River, St. Thomas More, Castlewood and Flandreau.

Standing in their way is upset-minded Chester Area, which was the No. 5 seed in Region 4B and upset No. 4 Canistota and No. 1 Howard to earn the SoDak 16 berth. The victories avenged a pair of regular-season defeats against the Hawks and Tigers.

The Flyers have also won five of their last six games. Stratton Eppard, who scored his 1,000th career point earlier this season, paces the Flyers.

Tuesday’s contest will be played at the Huron Arena.

No. 2 Lower Brule (19-3) vs No. 15 Viborg-Hurley (14-8), 6:30 p.m.

CHAMBERLAIN — Lower Brule and Viborg-Hurley will clash for the second time this season, with the stakes considerably higher than the first meeting.

It was another quality win for Lower Brule, which also defeated SoDak 16 qualifiers in Lakota Tech, White River and Freeman Academy/Marion. It split with Lakota Tech, while also falling to Class A SoDak 16 qualifiers Clark/Willow Lake and Sioux Valley. The Sioux also won the Lakota Nation Invitational title earlier this season.
