The road to the Class B boys basketball tournament in Aberdeen starts March 3. 

The Class B boys basketball tournament is March 20-22 in Aberdeen, and teams will start their postseason pushes March 3-4 and 7 with region play. The SoDak 16 contests are March 11. 

Here’s a look at each Class B boys region tournament:


Region 1B

Leola/Frederick Area secured the region’s No. 1 seed with an 18-2 regular-season record. The Titans and No. 2 seed Aberdeen Christian both received first-round byes. 

The Titans’ two losses were against Class A opponents Hanson (68-64) and Groton Area (92-65). Leola/Frederick Area will play either Wilmot or Tiospa Zina on March 4. 

The Titans defeated Wilmot (80-47) on Jan. 7, but did not play Tiospa Zina during the regular season. Wilmot and Tiospa Zina did not play during the regular season. 

Leola/Frederick Area, a Class B state qualifier last season, defeated Region 1B’s No. 2 seed Aberdeen Christian (77-68) and No. 3 seed Waubay/Summit (51-50) during the regular season. 

Aberdeen Christian (15-5) will play No. 7 Hitchcock-Tulare (6-14) or No. 10 Langford Area (3-17) on March 4. 

The Knights defeated Langford Area (83-51) during the regular season, but did not face Hitchcock-Tulare. Aberdeen Christian lost to Region 1B teams Leola/Frederick Area, Waverly-South Shore and Waubay/Summit during the regular season. But bolstered their regular-season record with wins over Class A teams Sisseton, Aberdeen Roncalli, Mobridge-Pollock and Redfield. 

No. 3 Waubay/Summit (13-7) will play No. 6 Northwestern (9-11) on March 4. The Mustangs defeated the Wildcats (54-42) on Feb. 8. No. 4 Waverly-South Shore (12-8) will play No. 5 Warner (8-12) in the other first-round contest. The Coyotes defeated the Monarchs (55-34) on Feb. 8. 

March 3

No. 8 Wilmot (6-14) vs. No. 9 Tiospa Zina (2-17), 7 p.m., CT, Wilmot 

No. 7 Hitchcock-Tulare (6-14) vs. No. 10 Langford Area (3-17), TBD

March 4

No. 1 Leola/Frederick Area (18-2) vs. Wilmot or Tiospa Zina, 7 p.m., CT, Leola

Region 2B

Castlewood emerged from a crowded field of double-digit win teams for the region’s No. 1 seed, and the No. 1 overall seed in Class B. 

The Warriors (18-2) will play Iroquois/Lake Preston or Arlington on March 4. Castlewood defeated Arlington (72-32) and Iroquois/Lake Preston (64-35) during the regular season. Iroquois/Lake Preston defeated Arlington (74-59) during the regular season.

Castlewood’s two losses were against Class A No. 2 Hamlin (74-52) and Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley (49-44). Castlewood picked up quality wins over Clark/Willow Lake, West Central, De Smet and Estelline/Hendricks during the regular season. 

No. 2 Wessington Springs (18-2) will play the James Valley Christian or Oldham-Ramona/Rutland winner on March 4. The Spartans split games with Wolsey-Wessington, including a 25-point comeback win in the 281 Conference championship on Jan. 23 in Huron. The Spartans' other loss was against Howard (47-40) on Dec. 21. 

Wessington Springs and Wolsey-Wessington could match up on March 7 in the region semifinals. No. 3 Wolsey-Wessington (16-4) plays No. 6 Deubrook Area (9-11) on March 6.

Wolsey-Wessington and Deubrook Area did not play during the regular season. 

No. 4 Estelline/Hendricks (16-4) plays No. 5 De Smet (12-8) in the other first-round contest. The Redhawks defeated the Bulldogs (75-64) on Feb. 18. 

March 3 

No. 8 Iroquois/Lake Preston (7-13) vs. No. 9 Arlington (1-19), 7 p.m., CT, Iroquois 

No. 7 James Valley Christian (12-8) vs. No. 10 Oldham-Ramona/Rutland (3-17), 7 p.m., CT, James Valley Christian School 

March 4

No. 1 Castlewood (18-2) vs. Iroquois/Lake Preston or Arlington, 6 p.m., CT, Castlewood

No. 4 Estelline/Hendricks (16-4) vs. No. 5 De Smet (12-8), 7:30 p.m., CT, Castlewood

Region 3B

Dell Rapids St. Mary earned the region’s No. 1 seed, and the overall No. 2 seed after posting a 19-1 regular season. The Cardinals will receive a first-round bye and will face Canistota or Sioux Falls Lutheran on March 4. 

DRSM’s lone defeat was a 63-59 decision against Class B No. 2 Castlewood on Jan. 21. The Cardinals since rattled off nine straight wins to end the regular season. DRSM also defeated Region 4B No. 2 seed Howard (62-48) in the season opener. 

The Cardinals did not face Canistota or Sioux Falls Lutheran during the regular season. 

Canistota clipped Sioux Falls Lutheran (56-54) on Feb. 7. 

Howard, last season’s Class B state champion, is the No. 2 seed in Region 2B. The Tigers (15-5) will play either Chester or Flandreau Indian on March 4. Howard defeated Chester (50-29) on Dec. 17, but did not play Flandreau Indian during the regular season. It’s the first meeting this season between Chester and Flandreau Indian. 

Bridgewater-Emery (13-7) is the No. 3 seed and will face familiar foe Ethan (9-11). The Huskies won the regular-season meeting, 59-58. 

No. 4 Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (12-8) plays No. 5 Colman-Egan (10-10) in the first meeting this season between the teams. 

March 3 

No. 8 Canistota (4-16) vs. No. 9 Sioux Falls Lutheran (6-14), 7 p.m., CT, Canistota 

No. 7 Chester (6-14) vs. No. 10 Flandreau Indian (3-17), 6 p.m., CT, Chester 

March 4

Region 4B

Viborg-Hurley earned the region’s No. 1 seed, and is the No. 3 overall seed in Class B after an 18-2 regular season. The Cougars earned a first-round bye and will play Irene-Wakonda or Freeman Academy/Marion on March 4. The region features seven teams with 10 or more wins. 

The Cougars dropped a 57-53 decision against Freeman in the season opener, but strung together 16 straight wins after the setback. Viborg-Hurley dropped a 59-38 decision against Class A No. 3 Rapid City Christian, but own quality wins over Bridgewater-Emery, Gregory, Pine Ridge, Castlewood, Centerville and Howard. Viborg-Hurley defeated Irene-Wakonda (74-45) and Freeman Academy/Marion (68-38) during the regular season. 

Parkston, which dropped down from Class A this season, is the No. 2 seed in Region 4B. The Trojans (15-5) will play Alcester-Hudson or Avon on March 4. Parkston did not face either team this season.

Freeman (16-4) is the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 Gayville-Volin (12-7). Freeman defeated Gayville-Volin (62-29) on Feb. 20.

No. 4 Centerville (15-5) will play No. 5 Tripp-Delmont/Armour (13-7) in their second meeting this season. The Tornadoes outlasted the Nighthawks (47-45) on Jan. 28. 

March 3

No. 8 Irene-Wakonda (8-12) vs. No. 9 Freeman Academy/Marion (6-14), TBD

No. 7 Alcester-Hudson (12-8) vs. No. 10 Avon (3-17), TBD

March 4

Region 5B

Gregory earned the region’s No. 1 seed after putting together an 18-2 regular season. The Gorillas earned a first-round bye and will play either Marty or Mitchell Christian on March 4. 

Gregory’s two losses were against St. Mary’s, Nebraska (64-43) and Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley (48-25). Gregory is on a 15-game winning streak entering the postseason. 

The Gorillas did not play either Marty or Mitchell Christian this season. Marty had 11 of its wins forfeited for use of an ineligible player. The Braves and Golden Eagles did not play this season. 

No. 2 Lyman (14-6) will play either Burke or Colome, a pair of teams it defeated this season, on March 4. Burke defeated Colome (64-23) on Feb. 18. Lyman won seven of its last nine games, including a 64-62 thriller over Stanley County in the regular-season finale. 

No. 3 Lower Brule (11-9) will play No. 6 Kimball/White Lake (4-16) and No. 4 Andes Central/Dakota Christian (13-7) will play No. 5 Corsica-Stickney (11-9) in the other first-round contests. 

Lower Brule and Kimball/White Lake did not play this season, while ACDC outlasted Corsica-Stickney (60-59) on Jan. 21. 

March 3

No. 8 Marty (1-19) vs. No. 9 Mitchell Christian (0-19), 7 p.m., CT, Marty

Region 6B

Sully Buttes is the region’s No. 1 seed after posting a 15-4 regular-season record. The Chargers have a first-round bye and will play either North Central or Herreid/Selby Area on March 4.

The Chargers defeated both the Wolverines (77-38) and Thunder (65-36) during the regular season. Three of Sully Buttes’ four losses were against Class A teams Winner, Miller and Mobridge-Pollock. Sully Buttes has won 11 of its past 12 games to finish the regular season.

Ipswich (12-8) is the No. 2 seed and will play Sunshine Bible Academy or Tiospaye Topa on March 4. The Tigers did not face either team during the regular season. 

Wakpala (10-10) is the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 Highmore-Harrold (6-14). No. 4 Faulkton Area (8-12) will play No. 5 Potter County (7-13) in the other first-round contest. Faulkton Area defeated Potter County (62-53) on Feb. 13. 

March 3

No. 8 North Central (7-13) vs. No. 9 Herreid/Selby Area (4-16), TBD

Region 7B

Wall is the region’s No. 1 seed after posting a 14-6 regular-season record. The Eagles will play either Philip or Edgemont on March 4. 

Wall dropped three straight games at the Lakota Nation Invitational in December, but strung together six straight victories. The Eagles then lost three straight to Custer, Hill City and Lyman before piecing together another six-game winning streak to finish the regular season. 

The Eagles defeated Philip (93-62) on Feb. 20, but did not play Edgemont during the regular season. 

No. 2 Crazy Horse (13-7) will play either Jones County or Oelrichs on March 4. The Chiefs defeated Oelrichs (82-20) in the season opener, but did not play Jones County during the regular season. 

No. 3 Kadoka Area (12-8) plays No. 6 White River (6-14) and No. 4 New Underwood (12-8) plays No. 5 Bennett County (7-13) in the other first-round matchups. Kadoka Area defeated White River (65-56) during the regular season. New Underwood defeated Bennett County (66-23) during the regular season. 

March 3

Region 8B

Lemmon put together a 17-2 regular-season record to earn Region 8B’s No. 1 seed. The Cowboys will play either Takini or Newell on March 4. 

Lemmon’s two losses were against Dickinson Trinity, North Dakota (64-35) and Class A Belle Fourche (65-53) in the regular-season finale. Lemmon won 16 straight games sandwiched in between the two losses, including the Little Moreau Conference tournament championship on Jan. 25.

No. 2 Timber Lake (13-7) will play No. 7 Faith (5-15) in the first round. The Panthers defeated the Longhorns (71-43) during the regular season. Two of Timber Lake’s seven losses were against Class A teams Mobridge-Pollock and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte. The Panthers also lost to Lemmon (twice), Aberdeen Christian, Sully Buttes and Wall during the regular season. 

No. 3 Dupree (13-7) will play No. 6 Bison (9-11) in the second meeting this season. The Tigers defeated the Cardinals (61-35) on Jan. 2. 

No. 4 Harding County (9-10) will play No. 5 McLaughlin (7-13) in the first-round contest. The Ranchers and Mustangs did not play during the regular season.

March 3
