College Notebook - Miller's Kadye Fernholz, Kansas State start season 3-0
Miller's Kadye Fernholz logged 17 kills and a team-high 18 total blocks in Kansas State University's opening weekend.

Miller High School graduate Kadye Fernholz and the Kansas State University volleyball team started its season with a 3-0 record on Aug. 26-27. 

The Wildcats defeated Sam Houston State, North Carolina State and Florida A&M to complete an undefeated season-opening weekend at the K-State Invitational. The Wildcats started their season 3-0 for the first time since 2013. 

Fernholz, a 6-foot-1 junior middle blocker, logged 17 kills and a team-high 18 total blocks during the opening weekend. Fernholz recorded seven kills and a team-high six blocks (five assists, one solo) in KSU’s sweep over Florida A&M. 

Against Sam Houston State, Fernholz logged a team-high three blocks and recorded five kills. Against North Carolina State, she had a match-high nine blocks (eight assists, one solo).

Through the season's first week, K-State leads the Big 12 in blocks per set (3.15) and Fernholz leads the Big 12 at 1.80 blocks per set.

Up next, K-State will play in the University of Central Florida Challenge in Orlando, Florida, where it will play Syracuse, North Florida and UCF on Sept. 1-3. The Wildcats’ contest at UCF on Saturday will be streamed live on ESPN+.


Sully Buttes’ Jacob Howard selected as NSU team captain 

Sully Buttes High School graduate Jacob Howard was selected as one of the team captains for the Northern State University football team. 

Howard, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound junior offensive lineman, appeared and started in five games last season for the Wolves. He was selected to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Academic Team of Excellence. Northern State will open its 2022 campaign on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Upper Iowa at Dacotah Bank Stadium in Aberdeen. 


Selby’s Emmit Bohle, Arizona State start season Thursday

Selby Area High School graduate Emmit Bohle will start the season as Arizona State University’s backup left tackle. 

Bohle began his career at Northern State University, where he converted from tight end to offensive tackle after arriving on campus in 2018. At NSU, Bohle started every game at left tackle and earned all-NSIC North Division honors in 2021. 

Bohle, a 6-foot-6, 290-pound redshirt senior, entered the transfer portal and received a host of Division I offers. He signed with Arizona State, which is coached by former NFL coach Herman Edwards, during the late signing period and has two years of eligibility remaining.

The Sun Devils will host Northern Arizona in their season opener on Thursday.

Miller’s Karst Hunter, Colorado Mesa open season in Missouri 

After a record-breaking freshman season, Miller High School graduate Karst Hunter is back behind center for the Colorado Mesa University football team. 

Hunter, a South Dakota State University transfer, landed at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference school last season and made quite an impression. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound quarterback was named the RMAC Offensive Freshman of the Year, setting single-season passing records in yards (2,481), completions (190) and completion percentage (62.5). He was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week three times in his first season. 

Hunter, a redshirt sophomore, and Colorado Mesa will open their season on Thursday in Liberty, Missouri, against William Jewell.
