SIOUX FALLS — Defending Class A champion Brandon Valley powered its way to the Floyd Farrand Invitational Thursday on the strength of five individual champions.

The Lynx racked up 268.5 points to turn back Watertown (250) and top-ranked Sturgis (243). Tea Area (171.5) and Brookings (110) rounded out the top-five teams. 

Brandon Valley was bolstered by the return of three-time state champion, junior Navarro Schunke (285). This was Schunke’s first tournament of the year and he pinned Watertown’s and Class A No. 1-ranked wrestler Micah Hach with a fall at 1:42 of the first period of the finals. Other Brandon Valley champions were Trevon Oehme (113), Jordan Oehme (132), Alex Mentzer (138) and Trason Oehme (145).

Watertown had three champions, Gage Lohr (106), Sloan Johannsen (120) and Weston Everson (126). 

Sturgis had two champions, Reese Jacobs (182) and Aiden Werlinger (195).

Other individual champions were Sioux Falls Jefferson’s Nolan Jessen (152), Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Keenan Sheridan (160), Milbank’s Barrett Schneck (170) and Abraham Myers of Sioux Falls Washington (220).

Custer claims team title at Harding County Invitational

BUFFALO — The Custer wrestling team garnered top honors at Thursday’s Harding County Invitational. 

The Wildcats had six individual champions and finished with 239.5 points, well ahead of Belle Fourche (137.5) and Bowman County/Beach, N.D. (127). Hettinger/Scranton, N.D. (116.5) and the Sturgis junior varsity (95.6) rounded out the top-five. 

Champions for Custer were Tyler Trant (106), Tray Weiss (113), Landon Woodward (126), Riley Scott (132), Jonathan Lewis (160) and Ryder Bailey (170). 

Other South Dakota champions were Lemmon/McIntosh’s Gage Anderson (120), Belle Fourche’s Thomas McCoy (152), Hot Springs’s Caleb Rickenbach (195) and Sturgis’ Tyce Uherka (285).

Belle Fourche and Hot Springs tie for team title at Harding County Invitational

BUFFALO — After a day full of wrestling at the Harding County Invitational, Belle Fourche and Hot Springs both racked up 71 points and a tie for first place. Custer (50), Rapid City Central (47) and Hettinger/Scranton, N.D. (46) rounded out the top five teams. 

Belle Fourche had two champions with Alexa Swaney winning at (132) and Izzabella Ramos at (154). Hot Springs also had two champions, Ciara Birds (126) and Keely Mogen-Frankfort (170). Other South Dakota champions were Lemmon/McIntosh’s Quinn Butler (120), Teagan Vining, St. Thomas More (142) and Jessica McKenney of Custer (285).
