Future Division I players highlight Class A all-state girls basketball team

Future college basketball stars of tomorrow make up today’s Class A all-state girls basketball team. 

The all-state first team, which is chosen by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association, features three South Dakota State University signees and a rising sophomore already receiving major Division I scholarship offers. 

The first team includes Tea Area’s Katie Vasecka, Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal, Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Emilee Fox, Sisseton’s Krista Langager, Flandreau’s Claire Sheppard and Hamlin’s Addison Neuendorf. 

Vasecka is the Class A girls basketball player of the year. A 6-foot-1 senior guard, Vasecka is making her fourth all-state selection and her third first-team appearance. Vasecka averaged 22.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game for the Class A runner-ups. A future SDSU Jackrabbit, Vasecka scored 1,886 career points.

Koupal, a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard/forward, is making her second straight Class A all-state first team. She averaged 21.3 points, 11.5 rebounds and four assists per game this season, while swatting 96 shots. She has already garnered scholarship offers from multiple major Division I college basketball programs. She has already scored more than 1,000 career points. 

Fox is appearing on her fifth Class A all-state team, including her third first-team selection. A 5-foot-8 senior guard, Vasecka tallied 21.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game this season. The Class A Spirit of Su, Fox guided the Titans to a Class A seventh-place finish this season. She scored 2,260 career points, finishing as the 16th all-time leading scorer in South Dakota girls basketball history. Fox will play college basketball at South Dakota State.

Langager, a 6-foot-2 junior center, is making her second all-state selection. She was a third-team all-stater in 2023. She powered the Redmen to a third-place finish at the state tourney, averaging 20.5 points and nine rebounds per game this season. 

Sheppard capped an outstanding career with another all-state appearance. A 6-foot-2 guard, Sheppard is making her second straight first-team selection, while she was on the second team in 2022 and the third team in 2021.

She guided Flandreau to a fifth-place finish at the Class A state tourney, averaging 14 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. She tallied 1,666 points, 729 rebounds and 301 assists in her career. She will play college basketball at South Dakota State University.

After a third-team selection in 2023, Neuendorf moved up to the first team this season. A 5-foot-6 guard, Neuendorf logged 20.5 points, 3.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game for the Chargers.
