SIOUX FALLS — Plenty of drama at the Class B state track meet, especially on the boys side and it all came down to the 1,600-meter relay. 

Gregory trailed Ipswich 53-50 heading into the final event and the Gorillas did just enough (finished fifth, 3:34.56) as the Gorillas and Tigers shared the 2023 Class B boys track and field title. 

Gregory (54) and Ipswich (54) tied with Deubrook Area finishing third (41.5). Viborg-Hurley (39) and Faulkton Area rounded out the top-five.

Much less drama on the girls side as the Colman-Egan Hawks led by Daniela Lee’s titles in the 100-meter dash (:12.16), 200-meter dash (:26.26) and anchoring the 400-meter relay (:51.98) and 800-meter relay (1:46.22). 

The Colman-Egan girls scored 88 points while Chester Area (49) and Deubrook Area (49) tied for second place. Northwestern (37) and Menno (31) rounded out the top-five. 

Saturday’s Boys highlights: 

• Luke Campbell, Viborg-Hurley: The junior won the 110-meter hurdles (:15.23) and the 300-meter hurdles (:40.77)

• Colome’s Joseph Laprath shocked the field in winning the Class B boys 1,600 meter run (4:35.42)

• The Faulkton Area boys won the 800-meter relay (1:31.57) and finished second in the 1,600 meter relay (3:30.19) and third in the 400-meter relay (:44.55)

• Chester Area’s Jovi Wolf repeated as Class B champion in the 200-meter dash (:22.93) and 400-meter dash (:49.03). 

Saturday’s girls highlights: 

• Menno’s Ashton Massey won the triple jump (34-10.75) and the 100-meter hurdles (:15.38) and the 300-meter hurdles (:47.19). 

• Chester Area’s Emery Larson won the 1,600 meter run (5:07.18) to go along with her 3,200-meter run title on Friday. 

• Colman-Egan’s Reese Luze repeated as Class B 400-meter champion (:58.74) with Deubrook Area’s Ellie Olsen second at (:59.28). 

• Freeman eighth grader Rylee Peters was second in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles (:47.19). 

• The Deubrook Area girls won the 1,600 meter relay (4:03.53).
