The Class A girls basketball all-state first team is loaded with future college basketball stars.

The honor squad, which is selected by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association, consists of six players with college basketball in their futures.

Hamlin’s Kami Wadsworth is the Class A player of the year and joined on the first team by St. Thomas More’s Reese Ross, Rapid City Christian’s Olivia Kieffer, Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal, Flandreau’s Claire Sheppard and Tea Area’s Katie Vasecka.

Wadsworth is making her second straight first-team selection and she was chosen to the second team in 2021. Wadsworth, a 5-foot-11 senior forward, led the Chargers to the Class A state championship after two straight runner-up finishes.

The future University of Sioux Falls women’s basketball player averaged 22 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game this season.

Ross, a 6-foot-1 forward, is making her second straight first-team selection. The University of Utah signee recorded 22.1 points and eight rebounds per game this season. The Cavaliers lost in the SoDak 16 this season, one year after Ross led them to the Class A state championship.

Kieffer was a second-team selection the past two seasons. She guided the Comets to a seventh-place finish at the Class A state tournament, averaging 25.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and four steals per game this season. Kieffer finished with 2,488 career points, the 11th most in South Dakota girls basketball history. The 5-foot-10 senior guard will play basketball next season at the University of South Dakota.

Koupal, a rising freshman, is the youngest player on the first team. The 6-foot-2 guard/forward is making her first-ever all-state team after logging 22 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this season. Koupal and the Red Raiders finished as the Class A runner-ups. Koupal has already received major Division I college basketball offers, including from Nebraska and Creighton.

Sheppard was a second team selection as a sophomore and a third teamer as a freshman. The 6-foot-2 junior led Flandreau to a sixth-place finish at the Class A state tournament. The future South Dakota State University Jackrabbit tallied 16.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game this season.

Vasecka, who missed a bulk of the season due to an injury, is making her straight first-team selection and was a second teamer in 2021. She logged 20.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game her junior campaign. The 6-foot-1 guard has verbally committed to South Dakota State University.

The second team consists of Sioux Falls Christian’s Ellie Lems, Wagner’s Emma Yost, Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Emilee Fox, Florence-Henry’s Caylin Kelly, Vermilion’s Brooke Jensen and Tea Area’s Mara Grant.

The third team consists of Sisseton’s Krista Langager, Red Cloud’s Ashlan Carlow-Blount, Sioux Valley’s Landree Wilson, Hamlin’s Addie Neuendorf, Custer’s Allyson Cass and Todd County’s Julise Shaw.
