HURON — Harrisburg’s young gun won another one.

Brianna Reilly added another state championship to her budding cross-country career, winning the Class AA state championship on Saturday.

The Harrisburg eighth-grade distance ace won her second Class AA girls cross-country title, covering the 5,000-meter distance at Broadland Creek Golf Course in 16 minutes and :45.92 seconds.

Reilly turned heads last season winning her first state championship, and returned atop the Class AA podium with her second title in 2025.

“Last year, everything was such a surprise,” Reilly said. “Because I wasn’t expecting that. But I always just try and thank God and do my best.”

On Saturday, Reilly pulled away from formidable runner Peyton VanDeest of Spearfish (17:24.79) for the title.

“I am pretty happy with how my time went,” Reilly said. “It’s pretty windy. So I am happy with how it went. I was just trying to do my best, and trying to just give my best to honor God and just do the best I can.”

Reilly and the Tigers also won their second straight Class AA state championship. Harrisburg scored 61 points, finishing well ahead of second-place Sioux Falls Lincoln (119).

The Tigers had four runners in the top-25 finishers: Reilly, Hannah Genrich (3rd, 17:34.55), Eloise Scharnberg (8th, 18:34.24) and Kailey Winter (23rd, 19:20.71).

The Tigers will return a bulk of their key runners, with Reilly (eighth grade), Genrich (freshman) and Scharnberg (seventh grade) also set to return.

With so much returning firepower, Reilly expects the Tigers to continue pushing each other on the course.

“I want to push myself and with the help of my teammates just try and help push them and they push me to be our best and be the best we can be,” Reilly said.
