July 28 State Class A Legion Roundup - Brookings stays alive with extra inning win over Harrisburg

Brookings12, Harrisburg 9 (8 Innings)

YANKTON — Brookings scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a 9-9 tie to stay alive Friday in the Class A state legion tournament. 

Brookings will play Sioux Falls East Saturday morning after Post 15 East eliminated Yankton earlier in the day. The winner of that game will play Harrisburg for the Class A title Saturday afternoon. 

Tate Helmbolt’s RBI single in the top of the eighth inning drove in Austin Clark to give Harrisburg a 10-9 lead, as the Tigers would add two more runs in the inning.

Parker Winghart led Brookings with triple and a home run while Justin Cofell had two doubles and Nathan Lease added a double. 

Zach Struck picked up the win, pitching the final three innings while giving up for three runs on four hits. He struck out three and walked two on 54 pitches. Nolan Miles got the start for Brookings, pitching five innings, giving up six runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked three on 93 pitches. 

Maddux Scherer led Harrisburg at the plate with two hits including a double and a triple, while Tate Larson added a double. 

Palmer Boyd got the start for the Tigers, pitching 4 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on four hits. He struck out three and walked four while pitching 92 pitches.   

Sioux Falls East 8, Yankton 0 

YANKTON — Sioux Falls Post 15 East scored five runs in the top of the first inning and cursed to a victory Friday to stay alive in the Class A state legion tournament. 

Myles Reese led Sioux Falls at the plate with a double and a two-run home run in the top of the sixth, as East would go onto score three runs in the inning. 

Lincoln Vasgaard picked up the win, pitching 6 1/3 innings, giving up four hits while striking out four and walking three on 104 pitches. Caden Watson picked up the final two outs on eight pitches. 

Drew Ryken led Yankton at the plate with two hits while Samuel Kampshoff took the loss — pitching 2/3 of an inning, giving up five runs on two hits. He struck out one and walked three
