NEW UNDERWOOD — One of the athletes that high school rodeo fans should pay close attention to this week is Landry Haugen of Sturgis. At this weekend’s regional rodeo in New Underwood, Haugen looked to be in fine form with exceptional performances in each of her events. 

Haugen was first in the girls cutting, scoring 20 points. She also tied for first in the reined cow horse (18 points) and the pole bending (18 points). A busy weekend saw Haugen fifth in the barrel racing, second in the breakaway roping, fifth in the goat tying and tied for fifth with her team roping partner, Acelyn Brink of Newell. 

Other event winners were Kashton Ford of Sturgis in the bareback riding (20 points), New Underwood’s Shelby Derbner in barrel racing (17 points), Newell’s Acelyn Brink in breakaway roping. 

Custer’s Jestyn Woodward won the bull riding (20 points) while Caden Stoddard of Norris and Rance Bowden of Belle Fourche tied for the top spot in boys cutting, each scoring 19 points. Whitewood’s Taylor Price and Custer’s Avari Dorrance tied for most points in goat tying this weekend, each finishing with 15 points. 

T. Merrill of Wall tied Haugen in the pole bending, 18 points while Gabe Glines of Smithwick equaled Haugen’s 18 points in the reined cow horse. Glines and New Underwood’s Eastan West both scored 15 points in the steer wrestling. 

Over the past two weekends high school athletes needed to score at least three points in their events to qualify for the state finals. The South Dakota High School Rodeo Association Finals are June 14-18 in Fort Pierre.
