With their season opener against Crow Creek postponed, the Jay Jacobs coached Little Wound Mustangs are one of the great unknowns heading into the Lakota Nation Invitational. Add to that, a year missed because of COVID-19, and the Mustang boys are ready to finally get on the court Wednesday.

“The players did miss out on a lot of learning, especially parts of the game that can only come with experience,” Jacobs said. “However, I am seeing a lot of hungry players that are eager to prove they belong up there with the best of them.”

The 2021 Lakota Nation Invitational will feature a number of ‘Big’ teams. Little Wound, with 6-foot-10 Dylan Cuny and 6-foot-7 Trey Yellow Boy, will be the biggest of those bigs.

Jacobs listed Yellow Boy, Cuny and 5-foot-8 senior Wakiyan Cuny, all seniors, as the core of his team.

“We have a host of young and promising role players who are eager to prove themselves,” he said.

2021-2022 Little Wound Mustangs roster:

Tayvon Apple, JR, G/F, 5-foot-8

Dylan Cuny, SR, F/C, 6-foot-10

Wakiyan Cuny, SR, G/F, 5-foot-8

Season outlook:

We look to make a strong push for the state tournament. We feel we have the team and players to do so. All the puzzle pieces are there, we just need to work to place them together. We feel that remaining excited and competitive is the key to our future success.
