Jan. 21 Girls Basketball Roundup - Mahpiya Luta tops Spearfish, improves to 11-0 on the season

Mahpiya Luta 59, Spearfish 49

SPEARFISH — Ashlan Carlow-Blount and Jodene Big Crow-Hunter combined for 36 points in Class A No. 2 Mahpiya Luta’s victory over Spearfish Tuesday.

Carlow-Blount finished with 19 points to power the Crusaders while Big Crow-Hunter added 17 points for Mahpiya Luta. Dorthie Mesteth tallied 12 points while Abigail Haas added five points in the win.

Spearfish’s Kate Scharf tallied a game-high 33 points in the loss.


Viborg-Hurley 52, Avon 46

VIBORG — Charley Nelson and Kendra Gilbert powered Viborg-Hurley to a high school girls basketball victory over Avon Tuesday.

Nelson finished the win with 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals while Gilbert added 13 points, three assists and two rebounds for the Cougars.

Avon’s Rilyn Thury tallied 15 points while Lila Vanderlei added 14 points in the loss.


Lakota Tech 74, Todd County 34

MISSION — Four players scored in double figures as Lakota Tech defeated Todd County in girls basketball action on Tuesday.

Lakota Tech’s Shania Ferguson finished with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Lizzie Robinson recorded 14 points, eight steals, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Bella Shangreaux tallied 12 points and six rebounds. Peyton Knife finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, four steals and four assists. Layla Janis added five points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. 

Todd County stats were not reported. 


Dell Rapids St. Mary 78, Castlewood 35

CASTLEWOOD — Three players reached double-figures as Dell Rapids St. Mary sailed past Castlewood in girls basketball action Tuesday. 

Mandala Hanson led the Cardinals with 22 points and five rebounds. Brianna Griffin scored 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds and Jenna Miller added 15 points and three rebounds. 

Cassidy Kirwan and Bryn Schooley each scored seven points to lead Castlewood. 


North Central 50, Ipswich 42

IPSWICH — Three players scored in double figures as North Central knocked off Ipswich in girls basketball action Tuesday night. 

Amree Vander Vorst led North Central with 17 points, six rebounds, two assists and six steals. Ella Batie scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Alaina Dosch notched 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. 

Jalyssa Hutson led Ipswich with 13 points, two rebounds and two steals. Marley Guthmiller added 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists and four steals.


Sioux Valley 52, Chester 40

CHESTER — Keyra Kruse’s 17-point double-double powered Sioux Valley to high school girls basketball victory Tuesday.

Kruse finished with 17 points and 17 rebounds, Kailey Cradduck recorded 13 points and five assists, while Amari Ward collected five steals in the win.

Jacy Wolf dropped 18 points in the loss, Emmerson Eppard had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Katelyn Schut tallied nine rebounds in the loss.


Centerville 73, Freeman 58

CENTERVILLE — Four players scored in double figures as Centerville improved to 13-0 in girls basketball action on Tuesday.

Centerville’s Izzie Eide recorded 21 points, five rebounds and three steals. Althea Gust tallied 20 points, six assists, four rebounds and three blocks. Emma Marshall added 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Tessa Eide had 12 points, five rebounds and three assists. 

For Freeman, Rylee Peters posted 18 points and 11 rebounds. Cadence Hofer added 16 points, six assists, three rebounds and three steals. Peyton McCune had 11 points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds. Lindsey Maske had seven points and four rebounds. 


Miller 62, Crow Creek 43

MILLER — Four players scored in double figures to pace Miller to a girls basketball win on Tuesday.

Miller’s Morgan Kolda finished with 15 points and Aleah Schlechter scored 14 points. Madelyn Saienga tallied 11 points and Paige Werdel scored 10 points.

For Crow Creek, Mary Dion scored 17 points and Justine Big Eagle had eight points. Allison Wells scored seven points, while Delilah Traversie scored six points. Laila Marshall had five points. 


Lyman 46, White River 31

WHITE RIVER — Mak Scott’s 17-point game lifted Class B No. 3 Lyman over White River during Tuesday's basketball action.

Scott finished with 17 points, four rebounds and four steals, Bree Smart recorded 12 points, six rebounds, eight assists and four steals, while Brooke Palmer added eight points, 11 rebounds and three steals in the win.

Elk Point-Jefferson 57, Vermillion 39

ELK POINT — Bentlee Kolbaum’s 21-point outing lifted Elk Point-Jefferson over Class A No. 4 Vermillion during Tuesday’s high school girls basketball action.

Kolbaum tallied 21 points and six rebounds in the win, Kaitlyn VanRoekel added 11 points, while Cera Schmitz tallied 10 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies.

Vermillion’s Taylor Reuvers tallied 14 points, Kasey Hanson had 10 points, while Brooke Jensen recorded seven points in the loss.


Faulkton Area 55, Aberdeen Christian 15

FAULKTON — Anika Mueller and Carley Cotton combined for 39 points as Faulkton Area ran past Aberdeen Christian in girls basketball action Tuesday. 

Mueller powered Faulkton Area with 21 points and two rebounds. Cotton finished with 18 points,  five rebounds, six assists and four steals. 

Sophia Eichler led Aberdeen Christian with nine points and four rebounds.


Beresford 56, Madison 21

BERESFORD — Ella Merriman’s 23-point game lifted Beresford over Madison in high school girls basketball Tuesday.

Merriman finished with a game-high 23 points while Lily Siebert added nine points in the win.

Madison’s Camber Hansley led with nine points in the loss.


St. Thomas More 61, Lead-Deadwood 23

RAPID CITY — Three players scored in double figures during St. Thomas More’s victory over Lead-Deadwood in high school girls basketball action.

Rachael Hyde and Leighton Scherr each tallied 14 points, Brynn Donnelly recorded 12 points, while Sloane Keszler added six points in the win.

LD’s Piper Rogers led with seven points while Atty Eastman tallied six points in the loss.


Burke 62, Platte-Geddes 18

BURKE — Emmie Hausmann’s 17-point burst lifted Burke past Platte-Geddes during Tuesday’s girls basketball action.

Hausmann finished with 17 points and three steals, Paige Bull recorded 14 points, six rebounds and two assists while Olivia Bull, Trystan Johnson and Annie Connot each had six points in the win.

PG’s Taylor Schrank tallied four points, three rebounds and two assists in the loss.


Great Plains Lutheran 61, Waverly-South Shore 20

WATERTOWN — Madeline Prahl’s 19-points helped Great Plains Lutheran defeat Waverly-South Shore during Tuesday’s girls basketball action.

Prahl tallied 19 points for the Panthers, Myra Lentz added 13 points, while Katherine Prahl totaled 10 points in the win.

WSS”s Carlee Mushitz led with seven points in the loss.


Sioux Valley 52, Chester 40
CHESTER — A big night from Keyra Kruse helped Sioux Valley pick up a win over Chester in girls basketball action Tuesday. 

Kruse powered the Cossacks with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Bailey Cradduck added 13 points, four rebounds and five assists while Talya Vincent chipped in with 12 points, two rebounds and two assists. 

Jacy Wolf led Chester with 18 points, five rebounds and three steals. Emmerson Eppard added eight points and nine rebounds.


O’Neill (Neb.) 55, Wagner 46

O’NEILL — Wagner fell to O’Neill, Nebraska, during Tuesday’s girls basketball action.

Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal had a double-double in the loss with 18 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and three assists, Lydia Yost totaled 12 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, Braxton Nedved added nine points, while Hayden Knudsen poured in five points in the loss.


Milbank 67, Waubay-Summit 36

MILBANK — Tyra Berry’s 16-point outing lifted Milbank past Waubay-Summit in high school girls basketball action Tuesday.

Berry finished with 16 points and four rebounds, Isabella Anderson tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists, Belle Pauli added nine points and 11 rebounds, while Anna Neugebauer recorded nine points in the win.

WS’s Faith Larson recorded 10 points and six rebounds, Liza Purdy totaled nine points, while Kayce Berger cracked nine points and three rebounds in the loss.


Hamlin 59, De Smet 34

HAYTI — Three players scored in double figures during Class A No. 5 Hamlin’s victory over De Smet Tuesday.

Issie Steffenson powered the Chargers with 17 points, Jo Steffensen recorded 16 points, Addie Neuendorf added 10 points, while Addie Steffensen tallied eight points in the win.

De Smet’s Hazel Luethmers poured in 16 points in the loss, while Megan Dylla added six points for the Bulldogs.


Harrisburg 48, Sioux Falls Roosevelt 33

HARRISBURG — A balanced scoring attack helped the Harrisburg girls to a win over Sioux Falls Roosevelt in girls basketball action Tuesday. 

Kinley Lawrenson led the Tigers with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Brynn Van Bockern added 11 points and Jaida Mason finished with seven points and 10 rebounds. 

Brooklyn Koll led Roosevelt with 12 points and Kalli Harris had 10 points.
