March 5 Boys Basketball Roundup - Mitchell holds off Stevens for Class AA tourney berth

Mitchell 64, Rapid City Stevens 52

MITCHELL — Mitchell pulled away from Rapid City Stevens to secure a spot in the Class AA state boys basketball tournament on Saturday.

Caden Hinker powered the Kernels with 27 points and nine rebounds. Gavin Soukup recorded 11 points, while Steele Morgan added 10 points and seven rebounds. Aiden Myers scored eight points. 

Rapid City Stevens’ Charles Christensen scored a team-high 14 points. Nate Kindred added 13 points, while Kolin Ray and Drew Marchant scored six points apiece. 


Sioux Falls Jefferson 79, Pierre 74 (2OT) 

SIOUX FALLS — Sioux Falls Jefferson rallied from an 18-point deficit and outlasted Pierre in a double-overtime thriller and advanced to the Class AA state boys basketball tournament on Saturday.

Kaden Year led the Cavaliers with 24 points, while Griffin Wilde added 20 points. David Jones finished with 14 points, while Beau Giblin scored seven points. Taylen Ashley had six points.

Pierre’s Lincoln Kienholz recorded 31 points and 13 rebounds. Jackson Edman added 12 points, while Matthew Hanson recorded 11 points. 


Harrisburg 85, Spearfish 46

HARRISBURG — Three players scored in double-figures as Harrisburg cruised past Spearfish to earn a spot in the Class AA state boys basketball tournament on Saturday.

Ethan Determan led the Tigers with 25 points, while Jacoby Mehrman tallied 17 points. Cam Phipps added 14 points.

Seth Hamilton led Spearfish with 15 points.


Yankton 47, Aberdeen Central 44

ABERDEEN — Yankton edged Aberdeen Central and secured a spot in the Class AA state boys basketball tournament on Saturday.

Rugby Ryken paced the Bucks with 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Dylan Prouty posted 10 points, while Cody Oswald added nine points and seven rebounds. Jaden Kral finished with eight points, six rebounds and five assists. Mac Ryken logged seven points. 

Aberdeen Central’s Sam Rohlfs finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Spencer Barr recorded 11 points and four assists. Alec Voegele recorded 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Noah Behrends finished with five points. 


Sioux Falls Roosevelt 57, Sturgis 19

SIOUX FALLS — Sioux Falls Roosevelt kept their undefeated season alive and clinched a berth in the Class AA state tournament as they raced past Sturgis in the SoDak 16 on Saturday.

Justin Shaw scored 10 points for the Rough Riders, while Thoralingo Gilo added nine points.

For Sturgis, Owen Cass and Jake Vliem each tallied four points, while Vliem also grabbed nine rebounds.


Sioux Falls Lincoln 47, Brandon Valley 40

SIOUX FALLS — J.T. Rock recorded a double-double as Sioux Falls Lincoln edged Brandon Valley to earn a spot in the Class AA state boys basketball tournament on Saturday.

Rock finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Elliot Whitney and Khalil Cisse scored nine points apiece, while Whitney collected five rebounds. Cameron Jackson logged five points, while Kyler Dahl finished with four points and six rebounds. Gage Gohl grabbed nine rebounds.

Brandon Valley’s Riley Miller finished with nine points and six rebounds. Dylan Langerock added eight points and four rebounds. Josh Olthoff logged eight points and six rebounds. Nate Vandeberg added seven points. 


Sioux Falls Washington 70, Watertown 63

SIOUX FALLS — Sioux Falls Washington had three players reach double figures as the Warriors earned a berth in the Class AA state tournament with a win on Saturday. 

Mikele Kambalo made 13-of-14 free throws and finished with 23 points and nine rebounds. Angok Akot added 16 points for the Warriors while Mandalla Mohamed contributed 12 points in the win. 

Watertown had two players reach double figures as Drew Norberg recorded 25 points, five rebounds and four assists. Reese Stark scored 13 for the Arrows while Cole Holden led the team in rebounds with six. 


Sioux Falls O’Gorman 79, Huron 51

SIOUX FALLS — Sioux Falls O’Gorman raced past Huron to clinch a spot in the Class AA state tournament on Saturday.

For the Knights, Matthew Eng scored 16 points, while Emanuel Struck recorded 12 points.

No stats were reported for Huron.
