SIOUX FALLS — Philip First-year head coach Travis Terkildsen spent weeks studying how to best utilize his guys to score points ahead of the state meet.

That work paid off on Saturday as the Philip Scotties scored 76 points to capture its first Class B state team championship since 2010, followed by Bennett County (56) and Freeman (45).

Despite only one gold medal, in the sprint medley relay, over the weekend, the Scotties still came out on top.

“It feels wonderful,” Terkildsen said. “I’ve been telling the people in Philip that I feel like I got handed the keys to the Bentley and just got told not to drive it into the ditch, and that's exactly what it felt like. This was a great team.

“There was a lot of strategy involved, trying to figure out where we could get the most team points and maximize the athletes that we had. And I thought the kids performed just like we hoped they would.”

Baylor Burns and Jack Peterson collected 12 points with a second and fifth place finish, respectively, in the 1,600-meter run on Saturday.

Philips’ Tyce Gropper, Owen Terkildsen, Beckham Terkildsen and Teagan Gropper took sixth in the 400-meter relay (:44.76). The quartet also earned fifth place in the 800-meter relay (1:33.21) as well.

Philips’ David McKinley totaled four points with a fifth place finish in the 400-meter dash (:51.38). Creston Burns added three points finishing sixth in the 300-meter hurdles (:42.50).

Creston Burns, Aidan Craven, Xander Harry and McKinley took second in the 1,600-meter relay (3:32.30) for eight team points.

On the girls side, Bennett County cruised to a team title with 98 points, ahead of Colman-Egan (60) and Ipswich (49). The Warriors featured five individual champions and two relay champions for the weekend.

BC’s Peyson O’Neill finished first in the 100-meter hurdles (14:46) and the 300-meter hurdles (:45.37).

Harley Harris won the triple jump title (3509.25) for the Warriors.

Reagan O’Neill added a top spot in the 100-meter dash (:12.07) and the 200-meter dash (:25.16).

Jade O’Neill took seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (:15.69) and eighth in the 200-meter dash (:26.55).

Peyson O’Neill, Macy Claussen, Harris and Reagan O’Neill ran a meet record to win the 800-meter relay (1:42.40), while Peyson O’Neill, Claussen, Harris and Jade O’Neill captured the 400-meter relay (:49.36).
