PINE RIDGE — Pine Ridge’s Marvin Richard III broke the South Dakota boys basketball all-time single game scoring record on Tuesday.

The scoring sensation netted 73 points in Pine Ridge’s 108-30 win over Lakota Tech in the Region 7A tournament. It broke the previous record of 72 points set by Argonne’s Delbert Gillam in 1953. Richard III hit 29 field goals, finished 12-of-12 at the free-throw line and nailed three 3-pointers.

Last season, Richard III set the Class A boys basketball scoring record with a 62-point performance, surpassing both West Central’s Josh Mueller (60) and Mahpiya Luta’s Alejandro Rama (60).

Richard III now has 2,622 career points, the sixth most in South Dakota boys basketball history. He will play college basketball at Division I South Dakota.
