BRANDON — The Platte Killer Tomatoes scored three early runs and Redfield Dairy Queen was doomed after that.

Behind another solid pitching performance from Grant Doom, Platte picked up a 12-3 win over Redfield at the Class B state amateur baseball tournament on Saturday at the First National Bank Field at Aspen Park.

Doom struck out 12 batters, allowed one hit, one earned run and walked nine batters in 5.2 innings for the win.

“He did a great job,” Platte manager Todd Strand said. “It was a good outing for him.”

Doom said he wasn’t 100% and wasn’t sure if he would start on Saturday, but “I kind of turned it around and kind of felt good before the game started,” Doom said.

He was backed by six runs through the first two innings, including a towering Hunter Hewitt home run over the 315-foot left field fence in the second inning.

“He threw me kind of the same pitch the same spot three times in a row,” Hewitt said. “He threw me three curveballs and I was just kind of sitting ready. The first two were balls and that one he kind of left over a little bit more for me, and I just tried to put a good swing on it.”

The Killer Tomatoes (14-7) continued to pile up runs, finishing with 12 hits and scored runs in seven of the nine innings.

“We really needed that,” Strand said. “We needed to score runs early and score them often. That was kind of our goal, get our bats hot and keep working them.”

“Starting the tournament hitting the ball like that is fantastic,” Hewitt added. “Anytime you start the tournament with a bunch of runs, a bunch of hits, it just builds confidence so you can carry it with you the rest of the way.”

Doom was relieved in the fifth inning by Dawson Hoffman, who struck out two batters, allowed four hits, zero earned runs and walked one batter in 3.1 relief innings.

Hewitt finished 3-for-5, while Doom went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs. Doom smacked a solo home run over the 315-foot right field fence. Richard Sternberg and Michael Buitenbos had two hits apiece, while Buitenbos drove in a run. Preston Nedved and Hoffman both drove in runs.

“Putting up a run every single inning and just putting pressure on them is huge,” Doom said. “Getting guys to see the ball, plate appearances is huge when you are getting into games in the state tournament.”

Camden Osborn, Bennet Osborn, Peyton Osborn, Cooper Hainy and Noah Hainy each had hits for Redfield, which finished the season with a 16-4 record. Nolan Gall, Cooper Hainy and Keaton Rohlfs drove in runs.

Gall took the loss, allowing two hits, five earned runs, five walks and struck out one batter in one inning.

Platte will play Four Corners at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12 in the second round of the state tournament.
