River Region rodeo athletes compete in Winner

WINNER — The second round of South Dakota High School Rodeo Association regional high school rodeos took place this weekend across the state. 

Blunt cowboys — Lucas and Chase Yellow Hawk — had another successful weekend in bareback riding at the River Region rodeo. Lucas scored 19 points with Chase scoring 18 points for the top two point totals in that event. 

Tommie Martin of Hayes and Megan Marone of Pukwana each scored 17 points in the barrel racing and tied for first over the weekend. Martin had a sensational weekend, winning both go-rounds in the pole bending and scoring 20 points.

Onida’s Taylor Burgee scored 13 points in the breakaway roping while Trail City’s 

Mark Sandquist won the bull riding with 10 points and the high score of the weekend (77).

Winner’s Garret Phillips gave the home crowd something to cheer about, winning the boys cutting competition, winning both go-arounds and finishing the weekend with 20 points. Burke’s Piper Hanson won the girls cutting competition, also winning both go-rounds and scoring 20 points. 


Fort Pierre’s Taylee Stroup was consistent in the goat tying and led all performers with 16 points over the weekend. White River’s Rhone Schmidt scored 18 points in the reined cow horse competition to just edge Pierre’s Ryen Sheppick, who scored 17.5 points. 

Burke’s Mason Hood and Kadoka's Gabriel Fauske tied for top honors in the saddle bronc, each scoring 18 points. 

Reliance cowboy Swade Reis competed in three events, winning the steer wrestling with 18 points. 

The team roping tandem of Tristan Spencer (Pierre) and Ty Graesser (Chamberlain) scored 14 points over their two runs. Layne Palmer of Kadoka scored 16 points in the tiedown roping. 

Athletes who scored at least three points in a specific event at their two regional rodeos will now advance to the SDHSRA Finals June 14-18 in Fort Pierre.
