South Dakota rodeo athletes make some noise at National High School Finals Rodeo

GILLETTE, Wyo. — As the National High School Finals Rodeo moves into the second go-round, a number of South Dakota athletes scored well on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. 

Early Wednesday morning Spearfish’s Brylee Grubb had an 8.02 goat tying run. That time was good enough for 2nd in today’s performance. Tuesday evening Salem’s Michaela McCormick had an 8.6 second run to finish 6th in her performance. The South Dakota girls are having a good run in the goat tying with Jaysee Jones, Howes in 5th, Grubb in 13th and Martin’s Isabel Risse sitting 21st in the first go round. 

Team ropers Tegan Fite, Hermosa and Treg Thorstenson, Lantry had a 6.13 run to finish 2nd in a Wednesday morning performance. Fite/Lantry are currently 4th after the first go round with the roping tandem of Tate and Tyan Johnson, Sisseton in 17th place after the first go round. 

Two of the South Dakota steer wrestlers found success in their first runs of the national finals. Long Valley’s Denton Good had a run of 6.57 seconds and was 4th in his performance. Buffalo’s Grey Gilbert finished 6th in a Wednesday morning performance but uncorked a 5.07 second run. Gilbert is in 12th place after the first go round with Good currently sitting in 29th place.
