CUSTER — Spearfish’s Peyton VanDeest and Hill City’s Tate Grabow captured titles at Thursday’s Black Hills Conference cross-country meet. 

VanDeest covered the 5,000-meter run at Rocky Knolls Golf Course in 19 minutes and :11.65 seconds, finishing ahead of teammate Kori Keil (20:29.78). Douglas’ Kira Ubence (20:54.28), Hill City’s Andee Frandsen (21:23.77) and Spearfish’s Sierra Sandford (21:26.35) rounded out the top-five girls runners. 

Grabow won the boys race in 16:43.61, while Douglas’ Wyatt Balliew (17:24.74) placed second. Sturgis’ Quinn Bruch (17:30.29), Spearfish’s Mason Gill (17:37.45) and Spearfish’s Rylan VanDeest (17:37.73) rounded out the top-five boys runners. 

Spearfish won both team titles. The Spearfish girls scored 19 points, finishing ahead of Hill City (44) and Sturgis (56). The Spearfish boys totaled 30 points, clipping Custer (35) for the team title. Sturgis (51) placed third.
