State Champions crowned at South Dakota high school rodeo finals

FORT PIERRE — With temperatures soaring South Dakota high school athletes laid it all on the line Saturday during the short-go at the South Dakota high school finals rodeo in Fort Pierre. Ten state champions were crowned Saturday as the top four in each event qualified for the National High School Rodeo Finals in Gillette Wyoming in mid July. 

In the saddle bronc competition, Blunt’s Lucas Yellow Hawk claimed the title with 74.5 points. Porcupine’s Jhett Knight won Saturday’s short go-round to punch his ticket to the national rodeo with a fourth place finish and a total score of 72.5 points. 

Piper Cordes of Wall won Saturday’s short-go in the barrel racing competition with a time of 17.421 seconds. Cordes’ final tally of 90 points was 17 points ahead of Hayes cowgirl Tommie Martin who finished with 17 points. 

Belle Fourche cowboy Charlie Henwood looked dominant all week in breakaway roping, winning every go-round at the state finals and finishing with 84 points. In the tiedown roping competition it was another cowboy from Belle Fourche as Rance Bowden locked up the state title by scoring 80 points. The team roping championship went to Tate and Tyan Johnson of Sisseton who finished with 79 points. 

Letcher’s Mason Moody and Colome’s Riley Shippy battled all week in the bull riding with Moody edging Shippy, 78.5-74.5 for the state title. 

Spearfish cowgirls Brylee Grubb edged Salem’s Michaela McCormick (78-76) to win the goat tying competition while Hayes’ Tommie Martin won the short-go in the pole bending to edge Wall’s T. Merrill (79-76). 

Other winners were Faith’s Traylin Martin in the saddle bronc competition and Long Valley’s Denton Good in the steer wrestling competition.
