State Softball Roundup - Chester, Tea Area, Lincoln win state championships

ABERDEEN — Chester (Class B), Tea Area (Class A) and Sioux Falls Lincoln (Class AA) captured state championships at the South Dakota state softball tournaments on Saturday. 

In Class B, Chester knocked off last year’s state champion Castlewood, 19-8, for the state championship. 

In Class A, Tea Area scored six runs in the seventh inning to rally past West Central, 9-5, for the state championship. 

In Class AA, Sioux Falls Lincoln picked up a 7-1 win over Harrisburg for the state championship. 


Chester’s offense tallies 17 hits in Class B title win 

ABERDEEN — Chester piled up 17 hits en route to a 19-8 Class B state championship win over Castlewood. 

Lexi Bauman finished 3-of-4 and drove in five runs, while Jacy Wolf collected three hits in four at-bats and drove in two runs. Lauren Roberts went 4-of-4 and Mara McDonald went 2-of-4 and drove in three runs. Maddie Borecky drove in three runs. Roberts earned the win after striking out 11 batters, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and walking three batters in a complete-game performance. 

For Castlewood, Natalie Akin had two of the team’s seven hits. Gracie Haug and Akin drove two runs apiece. Claire Horn took the loss after allowing 17 hits, 16 earned runs, seven walks and struck out 11 batters in a complete-game performance. 


Class B Scores

Championship: Chester 19, Castlewood 8 

Third Place: Scotland/Menno 11, Alcester-Hudson 5

Consolation: Florence/Henry 14, Gayville-Volin 3

Seventh Place: Deuel 10, Elkton-Lake Benton 0


Tea Area rallies for Class A state championship 

ABERDEEN — Trailing 5-3 entering the seventh inning, Tea Area rallied with a six-run frame for the Class A state championship over West Central.

In the 9-5 win, Tea Area scored six runs on five hits in the decisive inning. Addisyn Hansen drove in two runs in the inning. Froendt led Tea Area with two hits in three at-bats. Froendt earned the win after allowing five hits, zero runs, no walks and struck out three batters in 3.1 innings. 

For West Central, Caitlyn Hoff had two of the team’s 10 hits and drove in a run. Hoff took the loss after striking out five batters, allowing five hits, two earned runs and walked four batters in her 6.2-inning start.

Championship: Tea Area 9, West Central 5

Third Place: Dell Rapids 3, Madison 2

Consolation: Dakota Valley 5, Tri-Valley 4

Seventh Place: Beresford 12, Elk Point-Jefferson 2


Lincoln’s Madison Evans throws 15 strikeouts in Class AA title win 

ABERDEEN — Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Madison Evans struck out 15 batters to power Sioux Falls Lincoln to a 7-1 win over Harrisburg in the Class AA state championship.

Evans allowed one hit, one earned run and walked two batters in a complete-game performance. Evans added two hits at the plate. 

Kierra Lubovich and Avery Dorman had two hits apiece. Lubovich and Dekkers drove in two runs apiece.

For Harrisburg, Macy Bryant had the lone hit and drove in a lone run. Cora Payne took the loss after allowing 10 hits, six earned runs, walked three batters and struck out two batters through six innings. 


Class AA Scores

Championship: Lincoln 7, Harrisburg 1

Third Place: Sioux Falls Jefferson 8, Sioux Falls Washington 3

Consolation: Rapid City Stevens 4, Brandon Valley 3

Seventh Place: Watertown 12, O’Gorman 5
