Sturgis' Aidan Hedderman wins two events at Queen City Classic

SPEARFISH — With track meets at a minimum so far this season dozens of teams scrambled to get into Friday's Queen City Classic.

In boys action Sturgis’ Aidan Hedderman won the 110-meter hurdles (:14:45) and the pole vault (13-06). He finished second in the 300-meter hurdles (:40.19) just missing going under 40-seconds for the first time. 

One of the best races of the day turned out to be the 800-meter run. Custer’s Drew Lehman 

(1:59.64) nipped Hill City’s Brandon Escalante (1:59.96) with Hot Springs’ Matt Close (2:00.76) right behind. 

The Hot Springs boys flashed some moments of speed Friday with Braden Peterson winning the 400-meter dash (:50.08), finishing second in the 100-meter dash (:11.02), third in the 200-meter dash (:22.99)  and running a leg on the second place 800-meter relay (1:33.19).

The Rapid City Stevens 800-meter relay team (Liam LaCarrubba, Otto Red Bear, Landen Matkins) clocked a very fast 1:29.61. 

Custer’s Kincade Lehman picked up a win in the long jump (21-07.5) and Rapid City Christian’s Adam Stimes cleared (6-03) to win the high jump. 

Kadoka Area’s Lincoln Koehn won the discus (145-05) and was second in the shot put (51-04)

In girls action, a hotly contested race in the 3,200-meter run as Rapid City Stevens’ Gracie Uhre ran a 10:49.84 to edge Spearfish’s Peyton VanDeest (10:51).

The Rapid City Stevens girls had a solid day on the track and in the field. Avery Dormann captured the 800-meter run (2:23.68) and the Raiders picked up relay wins in the 400-meter relay (:49.53), the 800-meter relay (1:45.93) and Brynn Nelson in the javelin (130-06).

Spearfish’s Anna Hoffman won the 300-meter hurdles (:46.38) and was second in the 110-meter hurdles (:15.33). Spartan Maria Bouman won the high-jump (5-00) and the 1,600-meter relay team captured gold with a time of 4:08.77.
