Vermillion, Tea Area's Newborg capture titles at Class A state golf tourney

ABERDEEN — Vermillion and Tea Area’s Keeton Newborg captured state titles at the Class A boys state golf tournament at Moccasin Creek Country Club on Tuesday.

Vermillion scored a 310 on Day 2 to put their tournament total at 614, 24 shots ahead of runner-up finisher Aberdeen Roncalli (638). Dakota Valley and Sioux Valley tied for third place with a score of 645, while West Central rounded out the top five with a score of 646.

It was Vermillion’s first-ever boys golf state championship since 2007. Newborg won the individual title with a score of 145 and is the first Tea Area boys golfer to win state since Brock Murphy in 2018.

West Central’s Trey Even and Chamberlain’s Dakota Munger tied for second place with a score of 148 apiece. Vermillion’s Trey Hansen finished in fourth place with a score of 149, while Sioux Falls Christian’s Eli Anema and Kaleb Jost tied for fifth place with a score of 150 each.
