Vermillion edges Tea Area for Class A state championship, West Central's Anthony Lanham wins individual title

RAPID CITY — Vermillion claimed its second Class A state boys golf championship on Tuesday.

The Tanagers carded a 642, edging Dak-12 Conference foe Tea Area by one stroke for the championship at Hart Ranch Golf Club. Dakota Valley (652), St. Thomas More (664) and Chamberlain (679) rounded out the top-five teams. 

West Central’s Anthony Lanham captured the individual Class A state boys golf championship on Tuesday. 

Lanham scored a 1-under-par 143, finishing ahead of St. Thomas More’s Vincent VanLiere (145) for the title. 

Lanham shot a 68 on Day 1 on Monday, while he carded a 75 on Tuesday to hold on for the two-shot win. On Tuesday, Lanham shot a 41 on the front nine, but his 34 on the back nine was highlighted by three birdies to help secure the win.

VanLiere surged into the championship picture with a 32 on the front nine, which included four birdies. He shot a 38 on the back nine. 

Chamberlain’s Dakota Munger (151), Vermillion’s Cooper Girard (154) and Elk Point-Jefferson’s Carter Langle (155) rounded out the top-five golfers. 

Sioux Falls Christian’s Eli Anema, Canton’s Carson Steffensen and Tea Area’s Brady Sabers shot 156s to finish tied for sixth place. Parkston’s Payton Koehn, Flandreau’s Kaden Burshiem and Milbank’s Jonathan DeBoer tied for ninth place with 158s.
