Wayne Carney of Sioux Falls and longtime Yankton coach Bob Winter have been chosen to receive the Wooden Legacy Coaching Award from the National High School Basketball Coaches Association.

The award is in honor of John R. Wooden, who devoted his life to making an impact in the lives of others through the game of basketball.

Award winners are selected because they embody many of the same traits that Wooden felt were vital to success: education, longevity, character, service and excellence.

Carney received his Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of South Dakota in 1970 and his Master's degree in Secondary Education Administration from South Dakota State University in 1985. He and his wife Carol have three children: Julie, Shari and Shad.

Carney began his teaching-coaching career at Agar from 1970-77 where he coached cross country, track and boys basketball while also serving as the school's athletic director. From 1977-1994, he coached boys and girls basketball and also served as athletic director at Hamlin High School.

He later was the assistant principal for activities at Sioux Falls Washington High School from 1994-2001 and executive director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association from 2001-2017.

Carney has been a member of the South Dakota High School Coaches Association (SDHSCA) since 1970, serving on the group's board of directors since 1980 and as its president in 1986. He also has been a member of the South Dakota Coaches Foundation board of directors since 1993.

Winter spent 47 years in the Yankton School District as a teacher, coach and athletic director from 1963 to 2010.

In basketball, he guided Yankton's girls and boys teams to a combined 473-116 record with eight state girls basketball titles (1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1883, 1986, 1987 and 1988) and a boys state title in 1974. He also coached six state runner-up teams and eight other squads that made state-tourney appearances.

He owned and operated the Bob Winter Basketball Camps from 1966-2002 with as many as 800 players per summer participating. He served on three South Dakota High School Activities Association committees (ad hoc chairman for in and out of season rules, committee for Women in Sports Elite 15 awards and the basketball advisory committee. As an athletic director, he hosted a number of district, region and state events for fine arts and athletics.

Winter's long list of awards includes Siouxland Coach of the Year, National District Coach of the Year three times, 1987 National Girls Basketball Coach of the Year, South Dakota Biology Teacher of the Year, Yankton Education Association Teacher of the Year. Kellogg’s Coach of the Year, South Dakota Coaches Association Hall of Fame, South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, South Dakota Sportswriters Hall of Fame, Yankton College Athletic Hall of Fame, 1996 SD Regional Athletic Director of the Year, National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, 2008 Sioux City Relays Honorary Referee, 2009 National High School Athletic Director of the Year, 2010 USD Dan Lennon Relays Honorary Referee, 2013 South Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Hall of Fame (Activities Directors) and 2016 Yankton High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
