COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — After wrestling 333 matches in a two-day span, Team South Dakota is coming home from the Heartland National Duals with three All-Amerians. 

Sturgis athlete Zhoel Irion went 8-0 at the tournament wrestling in the 160-pound middle school division. Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Keenan Sheridan, wrestling at 155 earned All-American honors after going 7-0. Watertown’s Micah Hach (285) went 8-0 at the tournament and also earned All-American honors.

Day two Recap (Overall tournament overview)

Middle School Boys: 

Ended the day in the Gold bracket with a second place finish to Indiana Blue 49-15

In addition to Irion’s All-American honors two other middle school wrestlers were just one match shy of becoming All-Americans. Bon Homme/Avon’s Isaiah Crownover (7-1) and Tri-Valley’s Cole Hendrixson (6-1) both had great tournaments.

  • To become an All-American you have to wrestle a minimum of six matches, and have zero losses throughout the tournament. 

Overall the MS boys wrestled 128 matches in two days. 

 

High School Girls: 

Day two was all freestyle wrestling, and the girls wrestled the same four teams. Overall the high school girls placed second in the Freestyle division, behind team Iowa.  

The girls did not have any All-Americans, but there were some "revenge" matches that took place on Saturday. 

  • Pierre’s Abby Lewis (141) evened the head-to-head at 1-1 with Miah Kenney (Nebraska Blue), when Abby beat her in freestyle 10-0. 

  • Spearfish’s Taylor Graveman (135) avenged a previous day's loss against nationally ranked Lily Luft with a dominant tech fall decision in Freestyle 14-3. 

  • Canton’s Zoë Adam (188) went 6-2 for the weekend, losing only to nationally ranked Bella Porcelli from Iowa. 

Overall the HS girls wrestled 94 matches in two days.

High School Boys: 

The boys second day was all freestyle wrestling. The boys wrestled the same four teams as the previous day of folkstyle. Overall the boys placed second in the freestyle division as well, behind team Kansas.  

South Dakota had two other boys that were each 7-1, and just one match shy of becoming All-Americans.

  • Huron’s Moses Gross at 148 lbs and Canton’s Tanner Meyers at 198 lbs.  

  • Watertown’s Gage Lohr at 109 lbs, had two losses to the same wrestler from Nebraska Blue.  

Overall the HS boys wrestled 111 matches in two days.
