605 Sports' Ryan Deal named South Dakota's Sportswriter of the Year

605 Sports reporter Ryan Deal has been named South Dakota Sportswriter of the Year for 2022, the National Sports Media Association announced Monday. Deal is now a four-time recipient of the award, also winning it from 2017-19. 

As sports editor, Deal manages and produces daily content for 605sports.com. A Timber Lake native, Deal has covered South Dakota sports since 2006 and primarily covers high school and amateur sports for the web site, which was founded in 2021. 

“Ryan is incredibly deserving of this award,” LiveTicket.Tv and 605 Sports CEO Jody Brozik said. “I am very happy for him and the sports fans across the state. It is so satisfying to see his professionalism, work ethic and passion for the athletes, coaches, games and stories rewarded with this honor.”

Deal joins Roger Toland (Rapid City Journal), Ron Wood (Rapid City Journal), John Egan (Argus Leader), Don Lindner (Rapid City Journal) and Craig Stolze (Argus Leader) as other four-time recipients of the South Dakota Sportswriter of the Year award. 

The 2022 South Dakota Sportscaster of the Year is Steve Ammerman of KZZI-FM in Spearfish. Ammerman is a first-time recipient of the award. 


The NSMA selects sportscaster and sportswriter of the year award winners each year on a state and national level. 

ESPN College GameDay mainstay Lee Corso and Los Angeles Times sportscolumnist Bill Plaschke are among four elected to the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame, NSMA executivedirector Dave Goren announced. Corso and Plaschke are joined by two posthumous electees, legendary hockeyannouncer Dan Kelly and essayist Roger Angell.

CBS Sports’ Ian Eagle has been elected as the 2022 national sportscaster of the year. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic/PeteThamel of ESPN.com is the 2022 national sportswriter of the year.

Winners will be honored during the 63rd NSMA Awards Weekend & National Convention on June 24-26, 2023, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
