Angels, Cardinals roll on to Thursday's quarterfinals

MITCHELL — Alexandria’s march to a sixth title in seven years continued Monday with a 16-1 win over Volga.

The Angels jumped out to a 8-1 lead after four innings and opened the floodgates in the top of the eighth with eight runs. 

Peyton Smith, Cole Wenande and Jarrod Zens led Alexandria with three hits each. Tyson Gau picked up the win, pitching seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits. He struck out eight and walked one.

Noah Puetz led Voga at the plate with three hits while Zach Puetz added two hits. Trevor Olson took the loss for the Cormorants, pitching 3 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits before handing the ball off to Cole Gross.

The Angels, winners of the last four of five Class B championships will play Flandreau in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

The Cardinals’ limited Mt. Vernon to three hits en route to a 11-0 win in Monday’s first game.

Grant Hieb led Flandreau with four hits while Keith Cutler, Tim Huber, Bret Severston and Drew Demers added two hits each.

Dallas Schnelderman picked up the win for Flandreau, pitching seven innings while giving up three hits and striking out five.

Chase Hetland collected two of the three total hits to lead the Mustangs.
