DEADWOOD — Running over a 4,000-meter course the Sturgis boys and girls won team titles at Tuesday’s Mile High Preview meet.

The Sturgis girls scored 18 points, ahead of Belle Fourche (50) and Douglas (73). The Sturgis girls placed four athletes in the top-six to win the title at Tomahawk Country Club. 

Sturgis’ Iris Zylstra 16:14 won the individual title, just ahead of Red Cloud’s Rarity Cournoyer (16:20) and Lucy Hamer of Sturgis (17:05). Douglas’ Kira Ubence (17:22) and Sturgis’ Emily Reedy (17:30) rounded out the top-five. 

The Sturgis boys racked up 32 points, ahead of Dougals (53) and Belle Fourche (60). 

Individually Sturgis’ Ty Petrocco 13:26 finished in front of Belle Fourche’s Lane Krautschun (13:37) and Quinn Bruch of Sturgis (13:42). Douglas’s Wyatt Balliew (13:46) and Sturgis’ Morgan Papenfuss (14:04) rounded out the top-five. 


Panther teams win titles at Dakota Valley Invitational

NORTH SIOUX CITY — The Dakota Valley cross-country team gave their home fans something to cheer about Tuesday, with the boys and girls teams both winning titles at their home invitational at Adams Homestead and State Nature Preserve.

The Dakota Valley boys placed four runners in the top-six and scored 13 points, ahead of Sioux City East (31) and Tea Area (42). 

Dakota Valley’s Jack Brown (17:43) edged teammate Joe Cross (17:45) and Tea Area’s Reid Hammerquist (18:56) for the team title. Dakota Valley’s Michael Green (19:08) and Sioux City East’s Macia Schultz (19:31) rounded out the top-five. 

The Dakota Valley girls and Tea Area Girls both scored 30 points but the Panthers won the meet on a tiebreaker. Canton (33), Sioux City East (53) and Sioux City West (93) rounded out the top-five. 

Individually Dakota Valley’s Sophia Redler 21:40 won the race, ahead of Tea Area’s Jayci Babb (21:51) and Grace Bialas (22:27). Dakota Valley’s Alex McCullough and Canton’s Jayla York (23:58) rounded out the top-five. 


Estelline/Hendricks boys win title at home invitational

HENDRICKS, Minn. — The Estelline/Hendricks boys claimed the team title at their home invitational Tuesday. 

Estelline/Hendricks scored 31 points to outdistance second-place Deuel (45) at Hendricks Golf Course. 

Individually Estelline/Hendricks eighth-grader Cooper Schaefer claimed the individual title running 17:34.68, ahead of Deubrook Area’s Landen Johnson (18:04) and Deuel’s Tyson Hagberg (18:58). Deubrook Area’s Colton Trooien (19:14) and Estelline/Hendricks athlete Camden Hobbs (19:20) completed the top-five finishers.

No team points were kept in the girls team competition. 

Deuel’s Jaycee Hourigan 20:44 won the individual race ahead of Kylee Johnson of Deubrook Area (21:30) and Elkton-Lake Benton’s Malayna Hemmen (22:34). Deuel’s Isabella Imm (23:00) and Claire Dagel of Estelline/Hendricks (23:27) rounded out the top-five.
