Four productive post players and two dynamic scoring guards headline this year’s Class B boys basketball all-state first team, as chosen by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association.

The all-state first team includes Castlewood senior Bryon Laue, Viborg-Hurley senior Nicholas Hanson, Dell Rapids St. Mary seniors Trevon Beckman and Maverick LeBrun, De Smet junior Grant Wilkinson and Sully Buttes junior Wesley Wittler.

Laue is the Class B boys basketball player of the year, after totaling the most all-state votes in the class.

A 6-foot-9 senior center, Laue is making his second straight all-state first-team selection. He was a second-team all-stater in 2023. The dominant post player powered Castlewood to its first state championship since 2001, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the state championship win.

This season, Laue averaged 16.3 points and 12.4 rebounds per game. He swatted 73 shots and hammered numerous slam dunks. A future University of Sioux Falls men’s basketball player, Laue finished his career with 1,390 points and 1,045 rebounds.

“Bryon was a dominant force on both ends of the floor,” Castlewood coach Paul Raasch said. “By drawing so much attention on the offensive end and with his shot blocking and rebounding on the defensive side he had the ability to control the game without the ball in his hands. He was a tremendous leader for us on and off the floor all year long, and his focus and determination to win a title was infectious to our entire team. He's really a once-in-a-lifetime type of player for any HS coach.”

Viborg-Hurley's Nicholas Hanson, left, goes up for a shot against Dell Rapids St. Mary's Trevon Beckman, right, on March 21 in Aberdeen.

A 6-foot-7 senior forward, Hanson earned his second consecutive Class B all-state first-team selection. He was a second-team all-state selection in 2023.

This season, Hanson averaged 19 points and eight rebounds per game for the Class B state runner-ups. He finished his career with more than 1,500 points and 700 rebounds. Hanson was the Class B Spirit of Su recipient at the state tournament this season.

“As a three time all-state selection Nick has put in the work and has improved each season,” Viborg-Hurley coach Shane Warwick said. “He has impacted winning in all areas and has become a program difference maker. You would be hard-pressed to find a better young man and leader than Nick.”

Beckman and LeBrun powered the Cardinals to a third-place finish at the state tournament. A 6-foot-2 senior guard, Beckman was a second-team all-stater last season.

Beckman averaged 25.2 points, eight rebounds, 4.6 assists and 3.4 steals per game. He set single-season school records in 3-pointers made (88) and points (654).

Beckman scored 40 or more points twice this season, including a 46-point performance. A future Doane University men’s basketball player, Beckman finished his career with 1,440 points, 486 rebounds and 298 assists.

“Trevon was our No. 1 offensive option for the Cardinals over the last two seasons,” St. Mary’s coach Colby Fitzgerald said. “Trevon was a 3-level scorer with unlimited range. Not only did Trevon lead the Cardinals in scoring, he also dished out 4.6 assists per contest and had nine double-doubles on the season averaging eight rebounds per contest. Trevon elevated his game this year to another level which helped us make a trip to Aberdeen for the Class B state tournament.”

A 6-foot-6 athletic forward, LeBrun is making his first-ever all-state selection. LeBrun averaged 20 points, 11 rebounds, 3.2 assists, two blocked shots and 1.4 steals per game. LeBrun posted 16 double-doubles and posted a career-high 43 points against Garretson this season. LeBrun finished his career with 1,203 points, 581 rebounds and 182 assists. LeBrun will play college football at South Dakota State University.

Maverick demanded a lot of attention in the low post from opposing defenses throughout the season,” Fitzgerald said. “His grit and hate-to-lose mentality was definitely on full display throughout the entire season for the Cardinals. His high flying dunks and tenacious defense will definitely be missed by the Cardinal fans next season.”

A 6-foot-8 junior center, Wilkinson is making his first-ever all-state selection. Wilkinson put together a monster season out of the post for the Bulldogs. He averaged 23.3 points and 16.6 rebounds per game, while he logged 40 blocked shots.

Wilkinson set school records for points in a game (47), rebounds in a game (27) and rebounds in a season (368). He also tied the school record for most made field goals in a game (19). A college football prospect, Wilkinson has totaled 730 points and 518 rebounds so far in his career.

“He worked very hard every night and was able to go start to finish in every game,” De Smet coach Jeff Gruenhagen said. “His drive to win was contagious for his teammates and we got better as the season moved along. Grant has good footwork in the lane to get position and score.”

A 6-foot-1 junior guard, Wittler was an honorable mention all-state selection in 2024. The high-scoring guard averaged 26.2 points, 13.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game this season. He also totaled 82 steals. Wittler, who led the Chargers to the Class 9B state football championship in the fall, has scored 1,425 career points.

“Wes is one of the most competitive people I've ever met,” Sully Buttes coach Brian White said. “He consistently rises to the occasion. He is willing to take big shots and do whatever his team needs to win.”
