Chamberlain wins team titles at South Dakota 1A Clay Target League state tournament

ABERDEEN — The Chamberlain high school shooting team showed up Saturday winning the Clay Target League state tournament title at the Aberdeen Gun Club. 

The Cubs hit 480 targets to edge Hot Springs with 479 and Winner/Colome who scored 472. Lyman edged Chamberlain, 428-423 in the junior varsity competition while Chamberlain won the novice team competition hitting 394 targets to edge Deuel (386) and Aberdeen Christian (362). 

In the individual portion of the competition, Chamberlain’s Colin Mayer was the high male gun with 99 targets, edging Winner/Colome’s Jude Sargent who broke 98 targets while Zane Backouts of Aberdeen Roncalli was third with 98 targets. 

In the girls varsity competition Hot Springs athlete Jenna Kopp broke all 100 targets edging Winner/Colome’s Katie Welker (99) and Groton’s Tina Zoellner who hit 98. Kopp was the high gun performer of the 1A competition. 

In the boys junior varsity division Chamberlain’s Blaine Krenke was awarded first place although he, Lyman’s Coy Schulte and Britton-Hecla’s Isaak Jesz all broke 94 targets. Centerville’s Leah Wiese won the girls junior varsity division breaking 88 targets to edge Lyndsay Reetz of Hot Springs (85) and Audrey Murano of Sioux Valley (84). 

Aberdeen Christian’s Gideon Miller won the novice boys division, breaking 91 targets to edge Deuel’s Owen Haas (85) and Chamberlain’s Austin  Rose (83). In the girls’ novice division Deuel’s Destiny Bekaert broke 84 targets to edge Chamberlain’s Amelia Schroeder (83) and Wall’s Summer Probst (82). 

Over 30 teams participated in Saturday’s 1A competition.
