Pierre’s quest for state history continues on Friday.

The Governors need two more wins to earn their seventh consecutive Class 11AA state championship, which would be the longest streak in state history. Pierre and West Central (2000-05) are currently tied for longest streak in state history with six straight.

Pierre (9-1) will host Watertown (7-3) at 6 p.m. CT in the Class 11AA semifinals, with the winner advancing to the Class 11AA state championship at 7 p.m. CT on Nov. 10.

The Governors defeated Watertown, 49-20, on Sept. 22 in Watertown. Pierre’s lone defeat was a 35-14 setback against Class 11AAA Brandon Valley. Pierre has been nearly dominant against the rest of the Class 11AA field.

Pierre is scoring 40.7 points per game, while allowing 12.7 points per game on defense. Pierre’s two closest wins have come against other semifinalists, Yankton (27-14) and Tea Area (26-18).

The Governors handed Spearfish a 49-26 defeat in their playoff opener.

Watertown’s three losses have come against the other semifinalists, Pierre (49-20), Yankton (31-20) and Tea Area (31-15). The Arrows knocked off Aberdeen Central, 42-17, in their playoff opener.

In the other Class 11AA semifinal contest, Yankton (9-1) hosts Tea Area (7-3) at 7 p.m. CT. Yankton won the regular-season meeting, 27-14, on Sept. 15 in Yankton.

Yankton blanked Huron, 17-0, in its playoff opener. In addition to the Yankton loss, Tea Area lost to Sioux Falls O’Gorman (41-30) and Pierre (26-18). The Titans defeated Sturgis, 39-13, in their playoff opener.
