Class 11B Playoff Preview - Rematches and uncommon opponents headline quarterfinal round

Two rematches and two uncommon opponents make up the Class 11B quarterfinal round.

Winner (9-0) hosts Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central (7-2) and Mount Vernon/Plankinton (7-2) hosts St. Thomas More (7-2) in a pair of rematches from the regular season.

Winner topped Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central, 30-18, on Sept. 20 in Winner. The No. 2 seeded Warriors knocked off Hot Springs, 38-14, in their playoff opener to set up the rematch with the Blackhawks. Winner is averaging 29.7 points per game, while it is allowing just 5.9 points per game on defense. 

The No. 10 seeded Blackhawks outlasted Aberdeen Roncalli, 14-13, in their playoff opener. WWSSC scores 32.8 points per game and it allows 14.3 points per game on defense. 

Mount Vernon/Plankinton outlasted St. Thomas More, 36-33, on Aug. 30 in Mount Vernon. The Titans are on a three-game winning streak, including an 8-0 decision over Wagner in last week’s Class 11B opener. MVP averages 31 points per game and gives up 16 points per game on defense. 

St. Thomas More dropped its first games of the season against Sioux Valley (35-0) and MVP, but its rattled off seven straight victories. The Cavaliers topped Groton Area, 40-13, in last week’s playoff opener to set up the rematch against MVP. STM averages 39.9 points per game and allows 10 points per game on defense. 

On the other half of the bracket, Sioux Valley (9-0) hosts Mobridge-Pollock (7-2) and Elk Point-Jefferson (7-2) hosts Clark/Willow Lake (7-2). The two matchups pit teams unfamiliar with each other. 

Sioux Valley and Mobridge-Pollock have not met in recent years, while EPJ and CWL have also not faced off in recent memory. 

No. 1 Sioux Valley pulled away from Deuel, 47-26, in its playoff opener. The Cossacks score 41.7 points per game and allow 15 points per game on defense. 

The No. 9 Tigers went on the road last week and pulled past McCook Central/Montrose, 36-18, for its first playoff win since 2020. Mobridge-Pollock will now make the 250-mile trek to Volga to face the Cossacks. The Tigers are averaging 24.4 points per game and give up 15.6 points per game on defense. 

No. 4 Elk Point-Jefferson (7-2) hosts No. 5 Clark/Willow Lake (7-2). The Huskies defeated Flandreau, 44-14, in their playoff opener. EPJ's two defeats were against Class 11B's top-two teams - Winner (18-8) and Sioux Valley (17-14). The Huskies are averaging 34.6 points per game and are allowing 13.1 points per game on defense. 

CWL's two defeats were against Class 11B quarterfinalists Sioux Valley (56-36) and Mobridge-Pollock (21-0). CWL defeated Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan, 27-13, in its first-round game. The Cyclones score 26 points per game and allow 12.9 points per game on defense.
