The Class A state girls basketball tournament is Thursday-Saturday in Brookings. 

The field features six 20-win teams, including No. 1 seed Wagner (21-1). State-tourney stalwarts St. Thomas More, West Central and Hamlin are also in the field. 

Here's a closer look at each team in this year's tournament:

 

Dakota Valley

Record: 19-4

Coach: Tammy Lilly 

Stat Leaders: Rylee Rosenquist (22.5 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 117 assists, 74 steals), Peyton Tritz (10.7 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 40 assists, 39 steals), Jorja VanDenHul (9.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 29 steals), Grace Bass (9.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 36 assists, 41 steals).

Notes: The No. 7 seeded Panthers face No. 2 West Central at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the opening round. … The Panthers lost to West Central 64-53 at home on Jan. 11. … Dakota Valley defeated Parker, Lennox, and Mount Vernon/Plankinton to qualify for the state tournament. … This is the Panthers second straight appearance in the Class A tournament and third overall appearance (2010 was their first). … Rosenquist, a Dakota Wesleyan University signee, is Dakota Valley’s all-time leading scorer with 1,785 career points. 


Hamlin

Record: 21-2

Coach: Tim Koisti

Stat Leaders: Kami Wadsworth (21.6 ppg, 134 rebounds, 50 assists, 36 steals), Ally Abraham (9.6 ppg, 143 rebounds, 57 assists), Brooklyn Brandriet (9 ppg, 106 rebounds, 45 assists, 68 steals), Addie Neuendorf (8.5 ppg, 89 rebounds, 111 assists, 32 steals).

Notes: The No. 3 seeded Chargers play No. 6 Sioux Falls Christian at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday in the opening round. … Hamlin is riding an 18-game winning streak. … The Chargers two losses came against Flandreau and Crofton, Neb., both one point losses. … This is Hamlin’s 10th appearance in the state tournament. … Hamlin is making their fifth Class A tournament appearance in the last seven years. … The Chargers were last year’s Class A runner-up.


Lakota Tech

Record: 20-1

Coach: Laura Big Crow

Stat Leaders: Tobi Carlow (15.3 ppg, 3 rpg), Shayla Bravo (12.7 ppg, 4 rpg), Melina Shangreaux (12.4 ppg, 5 rpg), Moriah Morrisette (10 ppg, 5 rpg), Tawny Rodriguez (9.4 ppg, 9 rpg).

Notes: The No. 4 Lady Tatanka will play No. 5 St. Thomas More at 1:45 p.m. Thursday in the opening round. … Lakota Tech is on a 15-game winning streak. … The Lady Tatanka are making their first state tournament appearance in school history. … This is the second year of Lakota Tech Lady Tatanka basketball. … Lakota Tech’s lone loss was to Red Cloud (72-65) in the Lakota Nation Invitational championship game, but avenged that loss on Jan. 10 (79-60).


Red Cloud

Record: 20-2

Coach: Matt Rama

Stat Leaders: Stevi Fallis (16.2 ppg, 64 assists), Allison Richards (14.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 62 assists, 69 steals), Sharissa Haas (8.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg), Cheree Ferguson (6.7 ppg). 

Notes: No. 8 seeded Red Cloud plays No. 1 Wagner at noon on Thursday in the opening round. … Red Cloud has qualified for their second Class A tournament in the past three years (2020 canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic). … The Crusaders are on a six-game winning streak. … Red Cloud’s two losses come to fellow state tournament attendees Lakota Tech and St. Thomas More. … Allison Richards, Stevi Fallis and Sharissa Haas have all signed to play collegiately at Northeast Community College.


Sioux Falls Christian

Record: 20-3

Coach: Dan DeJong

Stat Leaders: Kylah vanDonkersgoed (14.3 ppg, 6.6 rpg), Ellie Lems (14 ppg, 5 rpg), Jaxsyn Swift (7.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg), Peyton Poppema (5.9 ppg, 3.4 rpg), Rachel VanNieuwenhuyzen (5.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg), Moriah Harrison (5.6 rpg, 3.8 ppg). 

Notes: The No. 6 seeded Chargers will play No. 3 Hamlin at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in the opening round. … Sioux Falls Christian will play in its second straight state tournament and its fifth overall. … The Chargers lost to West Central, 64-57, on Jan. 24 and have won 11 straight games since the defeat. 


St. Thomas More

Record: 19-3

Coach: Brandon Kandolin

Stat Leaders: Reese Ross (18.3 ppg, 9.2 rpg), Mairin Duffy (10.2 ppg), Jada Mollman (8.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg), Scarlet Grimshaw (4.2 ppg). 

Notes: The No. 5 Cavaliers will play No. 4 Lakota Tech at 1:45 p.m. Thursday in the opener. … St. Thomas More is riding a 10-game winning streak. … The Cavaliers are making their 11th overall appearance and have won six state championships since 2012. … Duffy is the younger sister of former STM girls basketball standouts Caitlin, Ciara, Moira and Aislinn Duffy. … The Cavaliers went 9-0 in Black Hills Conference play this season. 


Wagner

Record: 21-1

Coach: Mike Koupal

West Central

Record: 21-2

Notes: No. 2 seeded West Central plays No. 7 Dakota Valley at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the opening round. … West Central has won their last five games. … The Trojans are making their first appearance in the state tournament since finishing runner-up in 2019. … West Central has appeared in four state championship games (runner-up: 2005, 2019; champions: 1999, 2008).
