RAPID CITY — The Class A state tournament is Nov. 16-18 at The Summit Arena. 

The field includes five teams back from 2022, including Class A powerhouse Sioux Falls Christian. Wagner, Dakota Valley, Miller and Platte-Geddes are also making return trips. 

Sioux Falls Christian headlines a Dak-12 Conference flavor to the tournament. The Chargers are joined by fellow conference teams Lennox, Dell Rapids and Dakota Valley. 

Below are capsules on all eight teams in the field:


No. 1 Sioux Falls Christian (32-4)

Coach: Darci Wassenaar

No. 2 Rapid City Christian (33-5)

Rapid City Christian also lost to Laramie, Wyoming, Thunder Basin, Wyoming, Belle Fourche and Dickinson, North Dakota.


No. 3 Miller (28-6)

No. 5 Dell Rapids (25-6)

Dell Rapids also qualified in 1985, ‘86 and 2021. … Madelynn Henry, a 5-foot-11 freshman outside hitter, recorded her 1,000th career kill earlier this season. … Sophi Randall, a 5-foot-11 junior setter, has committed to play college volleyball at Division I Illinois. … The Quarriers lost to Class A No. 1 Sioux Falls Christian, Class AA Sioux Falls O’Gorman and split matches with Class A participant Lennox. 


No. 6 Wagner (26-4)

Koupal will play college basketball at NAIA Dordt University. … Ashlyn Koupal, a 6-foot-2 sophomore outside hitter, is a major college women’s basketball recruit and has received scholarship offers from Kansas, Iowa State, Miami (Ohio), Indiana, Nebraska, Colorado State and Creighton. 


No. 7 Dakota Valley (19-10)

No. 8 Lennox

Notes: Lennox will play Sioux Falls Christian at 11 a.m. MT Thursday in the opener. The Orioles have lost to Sioux Falls Christian twice this season. … Lennox also split with Class A participant Dell Rapids and lost to Dakota Valley, another tourney team. … The Orioles have qualified for state volleyball tournaments in 1987 and ‘89.
