Sioux Falls Christian starts the Class A boys basketball season No. 1 in the preseason rankings.

The Chargers, who finished runner-ups to Dakota Valley last season, have no seniors and will headline a crowded field of contenders. Sioux Falls Christian received 10 first-place votes in the preseason poll.

Hamlin, which finished third at state, is No. 2 in the preseason poll and garnered a first-place vote. Dakota Valley and Sioux Valley are No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Dak-XII Conference members Lennox and Dell Rapids were tied at No. 5.

Five storylines to watch

  • Dak-XII Conference to continue reign?: Dakota Valley won its second straight Class A boys basketball tournament last season. It also continued a streak of Dak-XII Conference teams winning the Class A boys basketball championship. Since 2016, conference members Dakota Valley (twice), Sioux Falls Christian (twice), Tea Area (twice) and Madison have combined to win state championships. • Loaded Region 3A: Region 3A will again be filled with worthy state-tourney teams, including Sioux Falls Christian, Dell Rapids, Madison and West Central. The quartet of teams will duke it out for region seedings throughout the season and see who secures the two SoDak 16 spots come postseason.

The Panthers won their second straight Class A boys basketball championship and are riding a class record 53-game winning streak entering the season. Last season, the Panthers broke Custer’s Class A boys basketball record of 49 straight wins. The state’s longest overall boys basketball winning streak is 64, set by Armour from 1978-80.
