Class AA Track and Field Athletes to Watch - Pierre's Kali Ringstmeyer headlines host of top-tier sprinters

The South Dakota state track and field meet is May 29-31 at Howard Wood Stadium. 

The three-day event features top-tier athletes from across the state, competing for individual and team success. 

Here’s a look at some of the top Class AA athletes to watch: 

  • Pierre’s Kali Ringstmeyer will conclude her stellar high school sprinting career this weekend. Ringstmeyer, a future University of South Dakota runner, has the top 100-meter dash time (:11.77) and the second best 200-meter dash time (:24.72). Ringstmeyer will also run on Pierre’s 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay. Ringstmeyer will compete with the likes of Rapid City Stevens’ Ella Bradeen, Sturgis’ Avery Marler, Pierre’s Charlee Williams-Smith and Aberdeen Central’s Gracie Rife in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. 

  • Avery Marler holds the top seed in the 200-meter dash (:24.68), while she ranks second in the long jump (18-4.25), third in the 400-meter dash (:56.58) and fourth in the 100-meter dash (:12.15). 

  • There will be no shortage of premier Class AA boys sprinters this weekend. Brandon Valley’s Landon Dulaney, a future South Dakota State University football player, set the state record in the 100-meter dash (:10.43) earlier this season. He also has clocked a :21.32-second 200-meter dash time, the best in the class. Lincoln’s Griffin Fischer also headlines the sprints, with the second best time in the 400-meter dash (:48.60), second best time in the 200-meter dash (:21.43) and third best time in the 100-meter dash (:10.72). Harrisburg’s Jake Thiesse and Lincoln’s Mikey Roche are other headliners in the sprint races. 

  • Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Libby Castelli will cap off her storied high school running career for the Knights. Castelli enters the state meet with the top Class AA times in the 1,600-meter run (4:40.39) and 3,200-meter run (10:11.66). Castelli also has the fourth best time in the 800-meter run (2:15.96). Castelli will run next season at the University of North Carolina. 

  • Castelli’s top contenders in the distance races include Harrisburg’s Brianna Reilly and Spearfish’s Peyton VanDeest. Reilly, a seventh grader, has the second best times in the 800-meter run (2:13.40), 1,600-meter run (4:49.92) and 3,200-meter run (10:15.00). VanDeest, a sophomore, has the third best times in the 800-meter run (2:14.54), 1,600-meter run (4:50.88) and 3,200-meter run (10:15.38). 

  • Rapid City Stevens’ Miles Brekhus, who captured the 1,600-meter run at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays earlier this month, has the Class AA’s top time in the race (4:12.48). Brekhus is also seeded second in the 800-meter run (1:55.70). 

  • Brandon Valley distance ace Mikah Peters has the top time in the 3,200-meter run (9:01.81), ranks third in the 1,600-meter run (4:16.28) and is seeded fourth in the 800-meter run (1:56.01). 

  • Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Kenya Harris will look to score major points for the Patriots. The senior has the top seed marks in the triple jump (40-1.25) and 300-meter hurdles (:44.43), while she ranks second in the 100-meter hurdles (:14.65) and fourth in the long jump (18-1). 

  • Rapid City Stevens’ Elias Gillen, a future Texas Tech University football player, will conclude his high school track and field career this weekend. Gillen, a future Red Raider offensive lineman, has the top seed marks in the shot put (62-7) and ranks second in the discus (176-8). Gillen won last season’s discus title, and finished second in the shot put. 

  • Brandon Valley’s Jayaunna Stroh could be in for a big state track and field meet. The junior has the top seed mark in the high jump (5-6), ranks second in the triple jump (37-4.5), is seeded fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (:15.21) and is ninth in the long jump (17-6). 

  • Brandon Valley’s Mach Mayen ranks No. 1 in the triple jump (47-5), ranks fourth in the high jump (6-4) and fifth in the long jump (21-11). 

  • Watertown’s Malia Kranz will be among the contenders in the throwing events. The junior is ranked No. 1 in the discus (140-11), third in the shot put (41-1) and 11th in the javelin (114-3). 

  • Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Danal Dean is seeded first in the high jump (6-7), second in the long jump (22-10) and seventh in the triple jump (43-10.5).
