Sioux Falls Christian girls and boys lead Class A standings after Day 1 of state track

SIOUX FALLS — The Sioux Falls Christian teams are sitting at the top of the team leaderboard following Day 1 of the South Dakota state track and field championships.

The Sioux Falls Christian girls have 27 points, ahead of Dakota Valley and Lennox, each with 14 points. The Charger boys are leading with 28.5, clipping Lennox (28) and Hill CIty (14).

Sioux Falls Christian girls relay teams powered the Chargers’ score early, taking the top spot in the sprint medley relay (4:08.56) and the 3,200-meter race (9:19.82). The sprint medley relay quartet consists of Katie VanderLeest, Mya VanDonge, Natalie Smith, and Anna Vyn while Sadie Pettengill, Smith, Bailey VanderGriend and Jerica Glasser round out the 3,200-meter relay team. Sarsih Kattenberg took home fourth place in the girls high jump event (5-01) and Sydney Schaap took seventh in the girls javelin throw (111-09).

On the boys side, Paul Hoekman and Marcus Furth dominated the shot put event taking home first and second place, respectively, and 18 team points for the Chargers. Hoekman tossed 68-04.5 while Furth finished in second with a toss of 61-11.75. The boys 3,200-meter relay team added eight points with a second place finish with a time of 8:04.99. The team consists of Levi Vander Leest, Brant Wassenaar, Jackson Prins and Bennett Wassenaar. Max Matherly rounded out the Charger scores placing sixth in the pole vault event (12-03), scoring 2.5 points for SFC.
