Class B Boys Basketball Region Previews

March Madness is about to ramp up. 

The South Dakota boys basketball postseason action starts Monday as teams will look to punch their tickets to the state tournaments. The Class B and A region tournaments are this week and the SoDak 16 qualifying games are Friday across the state. 

Here’s a look at the Class B region-by-region breakdown:

Class B

Region 1B

Outlook: Aberdeen Christian and Waubay/Summit both finished 17-3 in the regular season, but the Knights secured the region’s No. 1 seed.

The Knights, who are No. 5 overall in Class B, will play the winner of Britton-Hecla (4-16) and Wilmot (3-16) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Last season’s Class B state runner-ups, Aberdeen Christian enters the postseason having won 13 of its last 14 games. Aberdeen Christian’s season was highlighted by a four-game winning streak over Class B foes Potter County (61-56), Faulkton Area (58-54), Waubay/Summit (57-50) and Platte-Geddes (60-49).

Winners of nine straight, Waubay/Summit is No. 12 overall in the Class B seed points. Waubay/Summit’s nine-game winning streak was highlighted by a victory over Lyman (56-39) at the DWU/Culver’s Classic. The Mustangs will play No. 7 seed Leola/Frederick Area (8-12) on Tuesday. 

The other first-round games include: No. 4 Langford Area (11-9) vs. No. 5 Northwestern (8-12) and No. 3 Warner (12-8) vs. No. 6 Aberdeen Roncalli (6-14).


Region 2B

Outlook: Lower Brule recorded an impressive 17-3 record to earn the region’s No. 1 seed, holding off No. 2 seed Potter County by 1.05 seed points. 

Lower Brule, which is No. 2 overall in Class B seed points, captured the Lakota Nation Invitational title and defeated six Class A teams to bolster its seed points total. Its three losses were against Class A teams Clark/Willow Lake (53-52), Lakota Tech (79-73) and Sioux Valley (70-69). The Sioux will play the No. 8 Miller (3-17) vs. No. 9 North Central (2-18) winner in the quarterfinals. Lower Brule is gunning for its second consecutive state tourney berth. 

Potter County recorded a 19-1 regular season record, with its lone defeat against Aberdeen Christian (61-56). The Battlers finished the regular season on a 13-game winning streak, including wins over Class B foes Faith (73-72), Faulkton Area (70-58), Viborg-Hurley (83-55), Timber Lake (83-63) and Class A teams Hanson (69-59) and Stanley County (73-50). Potter County is No. 4 overall in the Class B standings. The Battlers will play the Sully Buttes (9-11) vs. No. 10 Sunshine Bible Academy (0-16) winner in the quarterfinals. 

The other first-round games include: No. 4 Ipswich (13-7) vs. No. 5 Highmore-Harrold (12-8) and No. 3 Faulkton Area (15-5) vs. No. 6 Herreid/Selby Area (9-10). 


Region 3B

Outlook: De Smet, the 2021 Class B state champs, compiled a 19-1 regular season to earn the state’s No. 1 overall seed. 

The Bulldogs’ lone defeat was against national power Dream City Christian, Arizona, by a 61-57 score at the Sanford Pentagon in December. De Smet’s season includes wins over Class B foes Dell Rapids St. Mary (60-42), Howard (59-38), White River (63-49), Canistota (65-45), Castlewood (77-34), Wolsey-Wessington (56-32) and wins over seven Class A teams. De Smet, winners of 16 straight, will play the No. 8 Waverly-South Shore (3-15) vs. No. 9 Lake Preston (2-18) winner in the quarterfinals. 

Castlewood (14-6) enters postseason play winning 10 of its last 11 games, with its last defeat against De Smet on Feb. 7. The Warriors, who are No. 10 overall in Class B seed points, defeated Class A Sioux Valley (59-52) on Feb. 15 to highlight their four-game winning streak.

Castlewood plays the No. 7 Arlington (7-13) vs. No. 10 Iroquois/Doland (3-17) winner in the quarterfinals. 

The other first-round games include: No. 4 Estelline/Hendricks (12-8) vs. No. 5 James Valley Christian (10-10) and No. 3 Wolsey-Wessington (15-5) vs. No. 6 Hitchcock-Tulare (8-12). 


Region 4B

Outlook: Howard held off a logjam of teams to earn the region’s No. 1 seed. 

The Tigers (16-4) finished with 44.200 seed points, holding off No. 2 Dell Rapids St. Mary (43.350), No. 3 Ethan (42.850) and No. 4 Canistota (42.650).

Howard’s season was highlighted by an eight-game winning streak, including three straight victories over Hanson (50-41), Bridgewater-Emery (49-42) and Ethan (49-46). The Tigers picked up wins over Canistota (49-42) and Viborg-Hurley (67-41) on Feb. 15 and Feb. 17, respectively. The Tigers are No. 9 overall in Class B standings. Howard plays the No. 8 Mitchell Christian (6-14) vs. No. 9 Colman-Egan (3-17) winner in the quarterfinals. 

Dell Rapids St. Mary (15-5) enters postseason play having won eight of its last nine games. The Cardinals, who qualified for last season’s state tourney, is No. 14 overall in the Class B standings. Dell Rapids St. Mary will play the No. 7 Bridgewater-Emery (9-11) vs. No. 10 Sioux Falls Lutheran (2-9) winner in the quarterfinals. Bridgewater-Emery defeated Dell Rapids St. Mary (54-48) on Feb. 25. 

The other first-round games include: No. 4 Canistota (13-7) vs. No. 5 Chester Area (10-10) and No. 3 Ethan (14-6) vs. No. 6 Oldham-Ramona/Rutland (11-9). 


Region 5B

Outlook: Freeman Academy/Marion compiled a 18-2 regular season record to grab the region’s No. 1 seed. 

The Bearcats, who are No. 6 in Class B overall, rattled off 11 straight wins in the middle of the season to bolster their record. FAM’s season also included the Great Plains Conference championship, defeating Burke (69-60) in the title game. FAM’s two losses were against Class B foes Howard (56-53) and Lower Brule (75-60). 

Freeman Academy/Marion, which is after its first state tourney berth as a co-op, plays the Alcester-Hudson (3-17) vs. Freeman (1-19) winner in the quarterfinals. 

Viborg-Hurley secured the No. 2 seed with a 12-8 record. The Cougars, who have qualified for three straight state tournaments, play No. 7 Menno (6-14) on Tuesday. 

The other first-round games include: No. 4 Irene-Wakonda (8-12) vs. No. 5 Scotland (9-11) and No. 3 Centerville vs. No. 6 Gayville-Volin (11-9).


Region 6B

Outlook: Platte-Geddes edged Burke by just .350 seed points to secure the region’s No. 1 seed. 

The Black Panthers, who are No. 7 in Class B standings, rattled off eight straight wins in the middle of the season to strengthen their 15-5 record. Four of Platte-Geddes’ five losses were against Class A teams, while it also lost to Class B foe Aberdeen Christian (60-49). 

Platte-Geddes will play the No. 8 Kimball/White Lake (7-13) vs. No. 9 Avon (3-17) winner in the quarterfinals. 

Burke, which is No. 8 in the Class B standings, won 10 of its last 11 games to help secure the region’s No. 2 seed. Burke’s three losses were against Platte-Geddes (65-53), Gregory (56-52) and Freeman Academy/Marion (69-60). Burke will play the No. 7 Tripp-Delmont/Armour (10-10) vs. No. 10 Colome (3-17) winner in the quarterfinals. 

Gregory (13-7) has won eight of its last 10 games to secure the region’s No. 3 seed. The Gorillas defeated three Class A teams, including a 69-60 victory over Winner, its lone defeat of the season. 

The Gorillas play No. 6 Wessington Springs (11-9) on Tuesday. No. 4 Marty (11-8) plays No. 5 Corsica-Stickney (12-7) in the other first-round game. 


Region 7B

Outlook: Class B power White River (16-2) is once again the region’s No. 1 seed.

The Tigers, who have qualified for every Class B tournament since 2006, are No. 3 overall in the Class B standings. White River’s two defeats were against the Class B’s top two teams Lower Brule (60-57) and De Smet (63-49). 

The Tigers’ season was highlighted by wins over seven Class A teams, including a 64-62 victory over perennial power Sioux Valley. They also knocked off formidable Class B opponents Aberdeen Christian (58-48), Lyman (58-36, 66-56) and Canistota (61-50).

White River plays the No. 8 New Underwood (7-13) vs. No. Jones County (7-13) winner in the quarterfinals. 

Lyman (14-6) earned the region’s No. 2 seed and is chasing its second straight Class B state tourney appearance. The Raiders, who are No. 13 overall in Class B, have won six of their last eight games. During the season, Lyman recorded wins over four Class A teams to bolster their record. 

Lyman plays the No. 7 Crazy Horse (9-10) vs. No. 10 Edgemont (4-16) winner in the quarterfinals. The other first-round games include: No. 4 Wall (12-8) vs. No. 5 Oelrichs (14-6) and No. 3 Philip (14-6) vs. No. 6 Kadoka Area (11-9). 


Region 8B

Outlook: Timber Lake compiled a 16-3 record to earn the region’s top seed. 

The Panthers, who are ranked No. 12 overall in Class B, earned the Little Moreau Conference title with a 65-59 come-from-behind win over Faith on Feb. 5.

Timber Lake’s three losses were against Faulkton Area (65-61), Warner (51-37) and Potter County (83-63). The Panthers, who are looking for their third state tourney berth since 2018, won 11 of their last 13 games to enter postseason play. 

Timber Lake plays the No. 8 Tiospaye Topa (3-14) vs. No. 9 Newell (1-16) winner in the quarterfinals. 

Harding County (14-5) edged Faith (11-9) by .613 seed points to earn the No. 2 seed in the region. The Ranchers and Longhorns split during the regular season, while a potential third matchup looms if both teams win on Tuesday. 

Harding County plays the No. 7 Bison (4-12) vs. No. 10 Takini (1-18) winner in the quarterfinals. Faith plays No. 6 McIntosh (5-12) on Tuesday, while No. 4 Lemmon (11-9) plays No. 5 Wakpala (11-8) in the other first-round contest.
