Class B Girls Basketball Region Previews

The real fun is about to start. 

The South Dakota girls basketball postseason action starts Monday as teams will look to punch their tickets to the state tournaments. The Class B and A region tournaments are this week and the SoDak 16 qualifying games are Thursday across the state. 

Here’s a look at the Class B region-by-region breakdown:

Class B

Region 1B

Outlook: Aberdeen Roncalli, which won last year’s Class A state championship, has put together an impressive 19-1 regular season to grab the No. 1 overall seed in Class B. 

In Region 1B, the Cavaliers cemented the top seed with a convincing 58-37 win over No. 2 seed Aberdeen Christian on Feb. 17. Roncalli’s lone defeat was against Hamlin, which it defeated in last year’s Class A state championship game. The Cavaliers have outscored their opponents by 21.6 points per game this season. 

The Cavaliers will play the No. 8 Langford Area (6-14) vs. No. 9 Wilmot (3-17) winner in the quarterfinals. 

Aberdeen Christian (17-3) will play No. 7 Leola/Frederick Area (9-11) in its opener. Aberdeen Christian, the No. 9 overall seed, enters postseason play having won six of its last seven games. 

The other first-round games include: No. 4 Britton-Hecla (9-9) vs. No. 5 Waubay/Summit (8-12) and No. 3 Warner (11-9) vs. No. 6 Northwestern (7-13). 


Region 2B

Outlook: By 1.105 seed points, Sully Buttes (16-4) held off Herreid/Selby Area (13-6) for the top seed in Region 2B. 

Sully Buttes, which is No. 10 overall in Class B, has won 10 of its last 11 games entering postseason play. The Chargers will play the No. 8 Ipswich (6-14) vs No. 9 North Central (4-15) winner in the quarterfinals. 

Herreid/Selby Area will play the No. 7 Potter County (10-10) vs. No. 10 Sunshine Bible Academy (0-18) winner in the quarterfinals. 

The other first-round games include: No. 4 Highmore-Harrold (14-6) vs. No. 5 Lower Brule (12-7) and No. 3 Miller (12-8) vs No. 6 Faulkton Area (11-9).


Region 3B

Outlook: De Smet went 19-1 during the regular season to secure Region 3B’s No. 1 seed. After a 74-47 setback against Hamlin on Jan. 18, the Bulldogs won nine straight contests to close the regular season.

De Smet, which is No. 2 overall in Class B, has outscored its opponents by 14 points per game. De Smet plays the No. 8 Lake Preston (6-13) vs. No. 9 Iroquois/Doland (4-16) winner in the quarterfinals. 

The No. 2-through-No. 5 seeds were separated by 3.368 seed points. Castlewood (14-5) secured the No. 2 and will play No. 7 Hitchcock-Tulare (6-14) in the quarterfinals. 

The other first-round games include: No. 3 Arlington (13-7) vs. No. 6 Estelline/Hendricks (7-13) and No. 4 Wolsey-Wessington (13-7) vs. No. 5 James Valley Christian (12-7). 


Region 4B

Outlook: Colman-Egan and Ethan both finished with 14-6 records, but the Hawks edged the Rustlers by just .200 seed points for the No. 1 seed. 

The Hawks won four of their last five games to help secure the top seed. Ethan, which has qualified for seven straight state tournaments, has won four straight games.

Colman-Egan plays the No. 8 Canistota (3-17) vs. No. 9 Mitchell Christian (2-16) winner in the quarterfinals. Ethan plays No. 7 Chester Area (5-15) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. 

The No. 3-through-No. 5 seeds are separated by 1.500 seed points. No. 3 seed Bridgewater-Emery (12-8) and No. 4 Howard (13-7) both racked up 42.700 seed points, but the Huskies claimed a 47-45 win over the Tigers to secure the head-to-head tie-breaker. Dell Rapids St. Mary (11-9) earned the No. 5 seed. 

The other first-round games include: Howard vs. Dell Rapids St. Mary and Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan vs. Oldham-Ramona/Rutland. 


Region 5B

Outlook: Centerville nipped Viborg-Hurley by .150 seed points to earn the No. 1 seed in Region 5B. 

Centerville put together an 18-2 regular season, with its two losses against Class A Hanson (63-37) and Class B power Corsica-Stickney (67-35). Centerville is No. 8 overall in Class B. 

In between the two losses, the Tornadoes racked up 17 straight wins, including a 52-49 win over Viborg-Hurley on Jan. 31. Viborg-Hurley finished 16-4, including three losses against Class A powers Dakota Valley (71-55), Parkston (58-51) and St. Thomas More (47-34). The Cougars are No. 11 overall in Class B. 

Centerville plays the No. 8 Menno (4-16) vs. No. 9 Freeman Academy/Marion (4-15) winner in the quarterfinals. Viborg-Hurley plays No. 7 Gayville-Volin (9-11) on Tuesday.

The other first-round games include: No. 4 Freeman (9-10) vs. No. 5 Scotland (10-10) and No. 3 Irene-Wakonda (13-7) vs. No. 6 Alcester-Hudson (7-13). 


Region 6B

Outlook: Corsica-Stickney finished 17-3 in the regular season and is No. 4 overall in Class B. The Jaguars racked up 45.400 to secure the No. 1 seed in Region 6B, finishing ahead of second-place Platte-Geddes (41.850), Avon (41.600) and Gregory (41.100).

Corsica-Stickney dropped two of its games against Class A foes Wagner (51-38) and Dakota Valley (67-66). It also dropped a 48-40 decision against Aberdeen Christian at the recent DWU/Culver’s Classic. 

Corsica-Stickney plays the No. 8 Tripp-Delmont/Armour (6-14) vs. No. 9 Kimball/White Lake (3-17) winner in the quarterfinals. 

No. 2 Platte-Geddes (11-9) plays the No. 7 Burke (6-14) vs. No. 10 Colome (1-19) winner in the quarterfinals. 

The other first-round games include: No. 4 Gregory (9-11) vs. No. 5 Wessington Springs (8-12) and No. 3 Avon (11-9) vs. No. 6 Marty (9-9).


Region 7B

Outlook: Wall held off White River to secure the No. 1 seed in Region 7B. 

The Eagles (18-2) finished with 45.500 seed points, finishing just ahead of the Tigers (45.333). 

White River handed Wall a 56-47 setback on Feb. 3. The Eagles also dropped a 63-60 decision against Rapid City Christian. 

Wall, which last qualified for state in 2016, plays the No. 8 Lyman (6-14) vs. No. 9 Oelrichs (3-15) winner in the quarterfinals. Wall is No. 3 overall in Class B. 

White River dropped two games against Class A teams Red Cloud (71-53) and West Central (59-34), while it also lost to Jones County (68-57) on Feb. 15. The Tigers are No. 5 overall in the Class B standings. 

The Tigers (15-3) just pulled ahead of Jones County for the No. 2 seed in the region. If the Tigers and Coyotes both win their first-round games, they will play each other in the SoDak 16 qualifying round. 

The Tigers will play the No. 7 New Underwood (7-13) vs. No. 10 Crazy Horse (0-15) winner in the quarterfinal round. 

The other first-round matchups include: No. 4 Kadoka Area (15-5) vs. No. 5 Edgemont (12-7) winner in the quarterfinals and No. 3 Jones County (15-5) vs. No. 6 Philip (9-11).


Region 8B

Outlook: Faith (15-5) earned the No. 1 seed in Region 8B with 44.400 points, finishing ahead of Timber Lake by 2.850 seed points.

The Longhorns have won six of their last seven games to close the regular season. They dropped a 47-34 decision against Class A Belle Fourche in the season finale. Faith is No. 7 overall in Class B. 

Timber Lake (12-8) and Faith played twice within six days midway through the season. The Longhorns won a 52-44 decision on Jan. 21, while the Panthers claimed a 50-35 victory on Jan. 27. Timber Lake enters the postseason on a four-game winning streak. 

Faith plays the No. 8 Tiospaye Topa (5-11) vs. No. 9 Takini (3-9) winner in the quarterfinal round. Timber Lake plays the No. 7 Bison (7-13) vs. No. 10 McIntosh (0-12) winner in the quarterfinals.

The other first-round games include: No. 4 Harding County (11-9) vs No. 5 Newell (7-12) and No. 3 Wakpala (9-6) vs. No. 6 Lemmon (6-14).
