SIOUX FALLS — Every time a Colman-Egan girls relay team stepped on the track at the 2023 Howard Wood Dakota Relays records were under assault.

After setting 3,200-meter and 800-meter relay records on Friday the Colman-Egan girls hunted down a 50-year old record from the 1978 Burke medley relay team (4:14.44) when the Hawks posted a winning time of (4:10.1).

“We talked about the record and we knew that this is what we are going after,” Reese Luze, who anchored Saturday’s medley relay said.

Daniela Lee, Lanie Mousel and Josie Mousel gave Luze a big lead and put the senior within striking distance of Burke’s record.

“I knew when they got me into that position that I just needed to go out and do my job, run my hardest and knew we would be there at the end,” she said.

Colman-Egan is having a great run of success winning the last two Class B state track titles but the 2023 team is laying down some impressive times in the relay events.

“We just have a super hard working group of young ladies,” coach Julie Preheim said. “They set their goals high and they aren’t afraid to get them.”

The Hawks began their assault on the Howard Wood Dakota Relays records Friday when the quartet of Presley Luze, Finley Luze, Brynlee Landis and Reese Luze ran (9:49.42) to win the 3,200meter relay.

“It was kind of exciting to see three sisters on one relay,” Preheim said. “Finley is an up-and-coming seventh grader, Presley is a sophomore and big sister Reese is the one leading them that gets them hyped and ready to go.”

The 800-meter relay record (1:47.32) was set on Friday evening with Reese Luze, Eliana Rhode, Lanie Mousel and Josie Mousel competing.

The run on Howard Wood Dakota relay records ended Friday afternoon. The Colman-Egan quartet of Lanie Mousel, Josie Mousel, Elaina Rhode and Daniela Lee won the 400-meter relay (:51.00), just off the meet record set by Ipswich (:50.49) in 2015.

The only relay the Colman-Egan girls didn’t win was the 1,600 meter relay. The quartet of Presley Luze, Brynlee Landis, Josie Mousel and Reese Luze ran a 4:06.12 to finish behind a school record effort (4:04.88) from Deubrook Area.
