WINNER – After mounting a comeback to tie Madison 4-4 after six innings, Lennox still had work to do.
First Jaxson Bittner came on in relief of Nate Haar who pitched six innings. The left-handed Bittner allowed a hit to Madison but no runs, giving Lennox a chance to get it done offensively.
Talen Eich led off the 7th inning with a double, followed by Haar getting hit by a Madison pitch. After a wild pitch advanced those runners, Mason Reischl’s sacrifice fly allowed Eich to score the winning run in a 5-4 win over Madison.

“We were down in each of our three games and everything was fought for and we had to scrap out every run,” Jeff Spieler, Lennox coach said. “After we won I saw just relief and a few teams and some of our players were a little bit overwhelmed.”
it was Madison who got things rolling early. Madison pushed across three runs in the top of the first off starting pitcher Nate Haar. The Lennox coaches stuck with Haar who gave up just one additional run through six complete innings.
“In that first inning he was just elevating a bit,” Spieler said. “We just told him to stay in the bottom half of the zone and he did a nice job of bearing down from there.”

Lennox had an opportunity in their half of the first inning. Lennox pushed across a single run but Madison got out of a bases loaded jam with a double play to end the inning.

Neither team scored until the bottom of the fourth when Lennox’s Mason Reischl scored following a sacrifice bunt from Gabe Veurink and a hit from Ramsel Williams.

The bunt proved to be an effective tool for Lennox as the team used the strategy throughout the tournament to score runs in tight situations.

“We do a lot of bunting and don’t go to the cage without bunting first,” Spieler said. “Against Winner (first-round) we utilized that strategy and with all of our games being close we just used any strategy to manufacture runs.”

Madison’s Cale Johnson led off the top of the fifth inning with a single and Quincy Kurtz reached on a fielding error from Lennox. Johnson eventually scored off a Myles Scheider single as Madison took a 4-2 lead.

Lennox’s Veurink reached base on a one-out single. After Ramsey Williams flew out, Teagan Musser reached on a single with Veurink and Williams advancing to second and third base respectively.

Griffin Boomgarden pinch hit for Jack Aasheim walked before Cole Spieler’s single drove in two runs and tied the game at 4-4.

“I felt like the defense was there all tournament,” Spieler said. “We cut down two guys at home against Madison and that proved to be the difference.”

This Lennox group has been together for a few years. They won the VFW 10U tournament a few years back and came up short in the 12U tournament two years ago.

“The whole tournament was really solid,” Spieler said. “We had to come from behind all tournament and every run we scored we fought for.”

Lennox ended their season with a 16-3 record. Lennox is coached by Spieler, Kelly Bittner and Mark Reischl.
