SIOUX FALLS — For a second consecutive year Custer’s Ciana Stiefel dazzled the crowd at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays. 

Stiefel cleared 12-9 on her third attempt, breaking her own meet record (12-7) set in 2023. The Custer junior took three attempts at (13-0) attempting to become the second South Dakota girl (Leslie Brost, Watertow 13-5.25). 


  • The Burke girls (Braelyn Duerfeldt, Addi Hood, Breckyn Pistulka and Piper Hanson won the 800-meter relay (1:48.29). That Howard Wood relay title was the first for Burke since the 1,600-meter relay in 1978. 

  • Northwestern's Ella Boekelheide had quite the meet: On Friday, the Northwestern sophomore ran a 2:15.07 in the Special 800-meter run Friday. On Saturday she came back to shatter her personal best in the 1,600-meter run with a (5:05.78). 

  • Sioux Falls Christian girls showcase relay dominance: Over the past few seasons we’ve come to expect nothing less in the relays from the Sioux Falls Christian girls. The Chargers were at it again this weekend winning the 800-meter relay, the sprint medley relay and the 3,200-meter relay. In the final relay of the day the foursome of Saveah Sichmeller, Halle Braun, Corinne Braun and Anna Vyn won the race, setting a meet record of 4:00.58. 

  • O’Neill siblings leave their mark at 2024 Howard Wood: It was a big weekend for a big family that lives on the eastern edge of Bennett County. Freshman Rush O’Neill won the high jump. Eighth-grader Reagan O’Neill finished second in the long jump (18-7.5), second in the 100-meter dash (:12.08) and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (:15.22). Seventh-grader Peyson O’Neill was second in the 100-meter hurdles (:14.88) and second in the 300-meter hurdles (:45.14).

  • Nyariek Kur has a busy weekend: Sioux Falls Washington senior Nyariek Kur won the high jump on Friday (5-7) then came back to win the triple jump on Saturday (39-2.25). Kur finished third in the long jump and third in the 100-meter hurdles.

  • Deubrook Area shows relay dominance: Space might need to be cleared in the Deubrook Area trophy case after multiple outstanding efforts. The Deubrook Area boys won the 3,200-meter relay (8:14.39), won the sprint medley relay (3:41.46) and won the 1,600-meter relay (3:30.26). The Deubrook Area girls won the 3,200-meter relay (9:54.27) and won the sprint medley relay (4:22.25).
