Custer boys, Sioux Falls Christian girls lead Class A team competition after Friday's state track competition

SIOUX FALLS — Sixteen points from brothers Kincade and Drew Lehman propelled the Custer boys into the team lead after Day 2 of the Class A state track and field meet.  

Kincade Lehman won the triple jump (44-10.75) and Drew Lehman finished third with a leap of (43-10.75). The Wildcats also grabbed points from Sean Shipp who finished sixth in the 3,200-meter run and Roland Sedlacek who finished second in the javelin (157-5). 

Custer leads with 49 points, ahead of Sioux Falls Christian (37) and Milbank (29). Hill City (27) and Winner (17) round out the top-five teams heading into Saturday’s finals. 

Three time defending champion Sioux Falls Christian had a third-place finish from Bennett Wassenaar in the 800-meter run (2:00.16). The Chargers had the top qualifying time in the 1,600-meter relay (3:33.10). 

The Sioux Falls Christian girls used a second place effort from Corinne Braun (10:53.53) and a sixth-place finish from Sadie Pettingill (11:19.67) in the 3,200-meter run to score points. In the afternoon session Braun (2:16.18), Anna Vyn (2:18.29) and Ellie Maddox (2:19.18) finished second, third and fourth in the 800-meter run to add 19 points to the Chargers team total. 

After day two of the Class A competition, Sioux Falls Christian has the lead with 67.5 points, ahead of Custer (29) and Dakota Valley (27.5). Lennox (25.5) and Canton (17) round out the top-five girls teams. 

Mount Vernon/Plankinton senior Berkeley Engelland won her fourth consecutive Class A state title in the 800-meter run (2:14.84). Engelland had the top qualifying time in the 400-meter run (:59.76) and the second fastest qualifying time in the 200-meter run (:25.40). 

On Saturday, Engelland will compete in the finals of the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash attempting to add to the 11 state titles she has already won.
