VERMILLION — The Dell Rapids Quarriers left no doubt on Friday.

Dell Rapids won its second straight Class 11A state championship at the DakotaDome, polishing off an undefeated season with a 42-6 win over West Central. It is Dell Rapids’ first time winning back-to-back since claiming three straight from 2010-12.

“This one is our banner,” Dell Rapids quarterback Jack Henry said. “This is the seniors’ banner. Last year was the seniors before us. So we got ours. It feels a lot better.”

For the second straight season, it was Dell Rapids (12-0) and West Central (10-2) duking it out for the state championship. In 2022, the Quarriers pulled away for a 24-7 win.

On Friday, it was all Dell Rapids.

“The start of this year our goal was to make it here and win again,” Dell Rapids senior running back Mason Stubbe said. “It’s a great way to end it.”

Dell Rapids scored on three straight possessions in the first quarter, bolting out to a 20-0 lead. Stubbe opened the scoring with a short TD plunge and Henry fired a 14-yard strike to Stubbe for another score. After Dell Rapids pounced on a West Central fumble, the Quarriers pulled some trickery.

One play after the fumble, Henry hit Tad Tjaden for a 41-yard touchdown on a flea flicker and 20-0 lead.

“Before the game, coach (Dustin) Steckler said if we get a turnover we are coming big,” Henry said. “So I handed it off, he threw it to me and it was supposed to be Stubbe coming around the edge, but I just launched it to Tad because he was open.”

In the third quarter, Henry added two more touchdown receptions to Cole Ruesink and Tjaden. The Quarriers led 34-0 halftime. Henry added another touchdown pass to Sutton Williams in the fourth quarter.

Chet Carda scored West Central’s lone touchdown in the fourth quarter. West Central’s other loss on the season was against Class 11B Winner.

Dell Rapids won its 24th straight game on Friday, the longest active winning streak in the state.

The Quarriers won their seventh state football championship in their ninth appearance at the DakotaDome.

“We have a lot of fans that support us,” Stubbe said. “They love coming out. They fill the stands every game and it’s awesome to bring another championship for them.”
