Errors prove costly for Lesterville in loss to Larchwood; Mudcats prevail past Expos

MITCHELL — Lesterville couldn’t overcome four costly errors in the eighth inning in Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to Larchwood in the second round of the state amateur baseball tournament. 

The Diamonds capitalized on the Broncs miscues for two runs to take a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the ninth where Lesterville was able to muster just a single run.

Cody Groskruetz led the Diamonds with two hits while Jaden Snyder hit an inside-the-park home run in the sixth to break the 0-0 tie. Snyder’s deep fly ball got past Lesterville centerfielder Jake Weier and rolled to the 420 marker in center field. 

Brian Wede picked up the win for the Diamonds, pitching seven innings giving up one run on four hits. He struck out three and walked none before handing the ball off to Joey Fitzgerald for the save.

Cameron Schlitz led Lesterville at the plate with two hits while Alex Wagner took the loss on the mound. Wagner pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out one and walked five.

Larchwood will face Dell Rapids Mudcats in Friday’s quarterfinal after the Mudcats took care of Wynot 13-5 in the early game.

The Expos jumped on Dell Rapids starter Dalton Lehman with four runs in the top of the first inning before the Mudcats answered with three in the bottom half of the inning.

Dell Rapids would tie it at 4-4 in the fourth inning before the teams traded runs in the fifth. The Mudcats would finally pull away with two runs in the sixth and added three in the seventh and eighth innings.

Mark Abrahamson led Dell Rapids at the plate with three hits including a home run in the first inning. Nate Henry, Matt Burpee and Josh Roemen added two hits each.

Lehman picked up the win, pitching eight innings, giving up five runs on eight hits. He struck out 11 and walked two before handing the ball off to John Speath.

Jackson Sudbeck led the Expos with four hits while Jalen Wieseler had two hits. Sudbeck took the loss, pitching 7 1/3 innings, giving up 11 runs on 13 hits. He struck out three and walked two.
