PINE RIDGE —- Midway through the high school track and field season, Lakota Tech’s Gilbert White decided to give the sports of track and field a try.

Three weeks later, the 5-foot-10 junior is the first Lakota Tech male athlete to bring home medals from the state track and field meet.

“The state track meet was pretty cool,” White said. “I love the sport now that I’m good at it.”

White jumped 41-8.75 to claim sixth place in the triple jump on Friday then came back Saturday to clear 6-1 in the high jump, good enough for eighth place among Class A athletes.

White’s first track meet of the year was on May 10 at the Lakota Nation Invitational. At that meet he qualified for state in the high jump (6-2) and triple jump (41-2). Three days later at the Bennett County Invitational, White cleared 6-3 in the high jump and improved his seed in the triple jump with a leap of 42-9.25.

In his only other meet, prior to the state meet, White finished second in the high jump (6-2) and won the triple jump (40-6.25) at the last chance meet in Custer on May 16.

“I did track a little when I was in the eighth grade but this is the first time I’ve really concentrated on the sport,” White said.

Hard core sports fans might remember White in the So Dak 16 basketball game in March as the Tatanka gave Sioux Valley everything they wanted in a 68-57 loss. White slashed his way for 24 points that night and averaged 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 3.2 steals per game for the season.

“The biggest reason I even went out for track was to work on my hops,” White said.

White said he will be playing AAU basketball for the South Dakota Network this summer.
