SIOUX FALLS — Hamlin’s Gracelyn Leiseth punctuated her Howard Wood Dakota Relays career with two more meet records.

The Charger senior broke her own meet record in the shot put (52-0.5) on Friday and set the meet record in the discus (171-3) on Saturday. She surpassed the previous discus mark of 167-feet, set by Red River, North Dakota’s Shelby Frank in 2019.

“I was glad for my consistency that I had,” Leiseth said. “I was happy with that and it’s just a cool environment here and I am thankful I get to throw here.”

It was Leiseth’s final season competing at the iconic track and field meet, which features a host of high school talent from the region.

“It’s a really cool meet because you get to see people from out of state and you compete against different people than you usually do,” Leiseth said.

Leiseth’s final Dakota Relays goals were to hit 50+ in the shot put and in the discus “just always striving to get better.”

She accomplished both over the weekend and battled a steady breeze in the discus on Saturday. But it didn’t phase the state champion.

“Not too much,” she said. “At the end it was starting to get a little windy, but maybe you have to throw it flatter sometimes.”

Leiseth will be back at the venue for the state track and field meet. She’ll then shift her attention to college, where she will throw for the University of Florida.

Leiseth picked the Gators over nearby Wisconsin and Iowa State University. Leiseth said she didn’t pick Gators to get further from home, instead it was a rare chance to compete at a high level.

“I just wanted to take an opportunity because I am only going to have this opportunity once,” Leiseth said. “So I might as well take it.”
