Harrisburg hoists first state championship since 2017

SIOUX FALLS — Harrisburg returned to the top of the Class AA ranks on Saturday.

The Tigers held off Sioux Falls Jefferson, 3-1, for the Class AA state volleyball championship at Denny Sanford Premier Center. The set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-23.

It was Harrisburg’s fourth state championship, including its third in Class AA and first since 2017. 

The Tigers (28-3) were led by Gabrielle Zachariasen’s 21 kills and seven digs. Morissen Samuels added 11 kills and nine digs. Kayleigh Hybertson posted 43 assists and 18 digs. Maggie Meister recorded 24 digs. 

Sioux Falls Jefferson received 11 kills and 21 digs from Ella Kvernmo. Madison Paulsen posted 11 kills and 21 digs. Presly Pastian dished out 45 assists and had seven digs. Sioux Falls Jefferson, a second-year program, was making its first-ever appearance in a state volleyball championship match.
