Hill City's Tate Grabow, Spearfish's Peyton VanDeest claim Black Hills Conference cross-country titles

FORT MEADE — Hill City’s Tate Grabow and Spearfish’s Peyton VanDeest won titles at Thursday’s Black Hills Conference cross country meet at Fort Meade. 

Grabow covered the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes and :06 seconds, ahead of Custer’s Sean Shipp (16:28) and Sturgis’ Ty Petrocco (16:40). Douglas’ Wyatt Balliew (16:58) and Sturgis’ Quinn Bruch (17:07) rounded out the top-five. 


Spearfish’s Peyton VanDeest won the girls race (19:34), ahead of teammate Kori Keil (19:57) and Belle Fourche’s Lia Mundt (20:13). Spearfish’s Madie Donovan and Douglas’ Kira Ubence (20:44) rounded out the top-five girls finishers.

The Sturgis boys won the team title with 34 points, ahead of Custer (41) and Spearfish (44). The Spearfish girls won the team title with 21 points, ahead of Sturgis (38) and Hill City (68).
